Scavenger Hunt from Life #144: Jan 6 - Jan 14

Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.

  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Joan: Thanks for the list.

I went out sketching at the Artist House with another art friend. Today I did not sketch the nearby canal scene; instead, I sketched my friend (the artist) at The Artist House. I gave her my painting. ...wc+pencil

Hi Vivien, Ned, and Ai!

Ai, I'm glad I posted the list early for you to get started. What a great way to begin the hunt by using a sketch of a fellow artist surrounded by all that artwork! I'm sure she was thrilled that you gave her the painting.

Joan - Thanks for fun list.

Ai - What a sweet painting and I am sure the artist you painted loves it. You set a high bar for this hunt! 😎

Keep sketching

Hi, everyone!

We had a little bit of snow today...not enough to get excited about (maybe 1/2 inch). Parts of the country got hit hard.

1 - interior view at Panera - watercolor and ink

Thanks Jo and Ai. I may need to find another indoor location for today since it is 21 degrees and 6 degrees with the wind chill. lol

It’s only 47° here this morning and forecast high today is 60 which will be for about 2 minutes around 3.😂 So there some empathy today.
Joan - Looking at the Panera sketch it finally clicked what was different about the old gas pump sketch. No ink! Kept looking wondering why that painting looked a bit different. All the detail in Panera sketch emphasized by the ink made it finally dawn on me.

Off to PT.

Joan -- Like the indoor viewpoint and your hands!

Sun is out here and it might get up to 60°, about to head out to go on a hike... I picked one single thing to try to practice today: instead of a cartoon-like contour I'm going to try to leave some openings in my lines. Part of what I like about sketching is that my thoughts "turn off" .. but that also makes it hard to remember what I want to do. Sometimes I finish and then think "oops, I forgot to ..... "

Hi Ai, Joan, Fletch and Ned. Happy sketching.

I had to go to the dentist. My bridge that was attached to the implants I had a couple of years ago just fell off. The office was closed for the holidays so went and got it glued back in today. I could have used super glue and saved $286 probably. Ha. I did some sketches at the dentist, grocery store waiting for groceries and home eating grapes. In the travel sketchbook with Micron 03 Not great but did something different than at home. Joan, Ai and Ned inspire.

Jo -- the shape of the car angled away and the scale of the cherry picker are really good. I laughed at "really bad drawing" written in your sketchbook. I'm really coming to think if you drew, it's not a bad drawing. I drew something like 30 or 40 cows on a piece of scratch paper Sunday while I was walking... sometimes just a couple lines or the curve of the head... and they aren't good ( or bad! ) but next time maybe they will be a little better! :)

There weren't many of the contour lines I was thinking of opening up in this one, but there was something similar... I didn't draw a line along the top of the bank between me and the channel of water even though there was an edge there... instead just a few bits of grass/shrubs along it... so I'll call that progress and try again on the next one! I know it's a water view, but it really struck me how quiet and peaceful it was sitting there.

Jo: That is not really bad drawing. It is good that you have great moments to draw. I love the tall lift crane. I should have drawn more... and many had came out not so good.

Joan: Wish you luck finding a warm spot to sketch.

Ned: Wow... love your sketch... what a lovely quiet spot. Glorious to our soul, aint' it.

Fletch: Hello.

Now I am back to more serious class prep. work. My new semester will start in 3 days... Yikes.
