Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.
If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:
https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign- up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Looks like you guys are getting ready. Here is a super quick one while Gene is on the stationary bike for 20 minutes.
Number 1 yuppie - an old Polo Shirt, so far off in size. Sigh. In the large Canson sketchbook with the Micron 03

Jo: Great start with Yuppie piece... Glad to know Gene is doing great.

Joan: Lovely plane and bus.

Ned: Cool small plane. I won't mind seeing your sketch of something many rounds...

Joan, amazing plane and bus. I might have a toy plane in the Christmas decorations. Ha.

Ned, great find on the plane. Each sketch will be different.

Ned, yes, great minds think alike. I like your plane! I wouldn't mind seeing it sketched more than once in hunts. I often sketch the same things multiple times. There is an area nearby that does helicopter flying lessons. I'll have to check if they have any that are near enough to the fences to see them for sketching.

Ai, thanks.

Jo, hope you find a plane to sketch.

Grapes, I don't think it is used as a schoolbus since it had a different logo on the bus. Most of them have the name of the school system or bus company and this one didn't.

Jo- Clever idea on polo shirt for yuppie . Nice sketch of shirt but am more fascinated by that hanger.

Joan - Nice graphite sketch of the plane. Really like the shading/reflection on the windscreen. Neat school bus. Looks like you got all the mirrors. 😎 The style looks different from your normal style.

Ned - Repeat all you like. Subject may be the same but bet each one will be unique in how you render it.

Made progress on Christmas card! Got sketch and masking done.
Keep sketching
Fletch

Jo - Good job on the wheel chair especially the wheels and hatching. Thanks again for the Richard Thorn video. Look below fir my first actual experiment.

#1 Badminton or racket sport - Tennis ball. (Actually it is pre-slit to use on a walker). This was a fun experiment of mixing graphite and watercolor which I thought was a no no. Jo sent me a link to a video of artist Richard Thorn who routinely uses watercolor over graphite. In most of his pieces I looked at you cannot even tell there is any graphite. I was doing this for fun as an experiment and did not take a picture of the graphite drawing, Duh! Drawn and painted on 7x10in cold press watercolor 140lb paper. Tried hard to get the fuzzy texture but need more study and practice.

Also a sneak peek at part of original sketch for a Christmas card
