Pastel making:
1 oz is about two tablespoons
About 2 tablespoons of material per pastel.
Fixing pastels makes them change color because the chalk in them becomes transparent when sealed. Pure pigment ones hold their color better. Adding ti white might help too.
I can do this on the cheap if I only use found pigments.
1:30 gum tragacanth to powder.

A very small graphite pastel:

Just needs to dry.

light gray and pure graphite. The gray was supposed to be white, but eh. The chalk seems to condition it. Trying to roll the pure graphite one was hard. It kept cracking even when very moist. Hopefully it holds together enough.

A better white, made with pure chalk. Going to see if I can use it like a blender pencil.

They work pretty good, I think. Interesting to note, the chalk seems to make them handle better too. The pure graphite one is rock hard and will only make a light stroke. The others work fine and layer a bit even on regular paper.
You can see in the bottom pic, that the pure graphite one polished itself to a mirror finish.

light, middle dark isn't exact, it's grouped into close enough ranges. Functionally identical, not actually identical.

Desaturating with "complementary" colors. The little wheel thing works ok (with a few adjustments) as long as you mix your colors to match the tabs. I think its best use is just reminding me I can do that.

Using printer toner as pigment mixed into open acrylic medium.

The carbon and mars are Golden tube paints. It incorporates really easily into the acrylic and makes a very dense, matte paint. Makes sense, since it's essentially ultra fine ground pigmented plastic. Will have to do lightfastness tests, but I believe toner is solid in that dept. It's dye based inkjet inks that are a problem. Have to get my hands on some colored toner eventually.

Now to get around to actually painting...
