Psyche & Amor – 23-05-23

Intriguing piece... and coincidentally my current work in progress may be on the same theme: Psyche. I say may because my paintings tend to evolve during the painting progress. Well into a painting I often find I don't really know what it's about or what the theme will eventually become. But I'm not alone in this. Dekooning famously wrote: I think I'm painting a picture of two women, but it may turn out to be a landscape.

Thanks and I know what you mean. Initially I just wanted to call it 'Homage to Alma Tadema' after the prestudy in graphite. But because Lawrence Alma Tadema also sometimes annoys me with his sweet and darling depictions of beautiful women in lush Roman gardens I decided to give it some pun. Hence the dagger in her hand and that's why Psyche came into existence. I may also quote Picasso who said he started with one idea and it became another. I'm curious about your painting. Let me know when it's finished.
