I did the ink sketch for this 5" x 4" sketch in Sept 2023 during Chennai Weekend Artists' (the on-location sketching group that I am a member of) 11th anniversary event, and added the watercolour washes yesterday (twenty-seven months later).

I used to take longer over my sketches when I was sketching from photo references. Once I started sketching on location (which I did very regularly from 2012 onwards) I speeded up, and most often I would finish a sketch in about 45 minutes to an hour. Although I did sketch much quicker occasionally because circumstances forced me to do so, it was only about twenty months ago that I started sketching much quicker, in ten to twenty minutes, in the hope that it would help me overcome progressively unsteady hands.
Almost all my ink sketches, regardless of size, are in sketchbooks. My smaller (A6, and A5 sizes) colour sketches are all in sketch books. Some of my A4 size sketches are in sketchbooks and some on loose sheets. And all of my A3 size paintings are on loose sheets.
My A6 and A5 sketchbooks have a stiff back cover, and their metal binding allows me to fold the two halves over and hold them in one hand, while I sketch with the other. This is is how I sketch in these sketchbooks regardless of whether I am doing it on location or at home. I sometimes sketch in my A4 size sketchbooks the same way, and sometimes, I place them on a table and sketch. For A3 size sketches and paintings I need to work on a table, I am attaching an image of my A6 size (approximately 5" x 4") sketchbook to show the type of binding that it has.
I was thinking what a beautiful thing it would be to have them properly bound, like a book, especially around the A5 size. They’re a bit like the watercolours made by artists accompanying the early explorers, which I’ve always liked.
