Little Plums

These are some kind of wild plums that look a little like cherries on steroids. They were good models for learning to mix reds and practice shadows. I have a long way to go but I enjoy setting up objects and observing what the light does to them. I made a little "abscrap" from the leftovers. Paint is so outrageously expensive and I feel like I should try to use it up instead of scraping it into the trash. Plums are 6x6 oil on paper and abstract is 4x4 oil and cold wax on paper.

I love both of these Donna. They're nice side by side too with the complimentary colours. Good idea on recycling paints!

Plumbs are stunning..not sold on the shadows as they look foreign to the plumbs. I can’t say why so it could be simply personal preference only. Abstract is cool. Agree about the cost of paint.

Thanks Jade and Wayne. I'll be working on shadows for sure. Trying to keep them transparent is a challenge. The little abstracts are fun and no-stress and I love mixing in cold wax and smooshing it around.

Look for the reds and greens in your shadows ... i think that might work better than blue.

Thanks Wayne. The plums were on a white paper towel and I did see a little red in the shadows but it doesn’t show up in the photo. I’ll look for greens too next time. All I saw was blue-violet but I was looking into the light so I probably couldn’t see colors like I should have. This is all good to know for the next one.

You must paint it your way and the painting has only to please you. I should not have mentioned it as I’m sure your eye knows what works and doesn’t. I’ll be a good old man in future.

Ha! Wayne, please don’t hold back with the comments! It’s how I learn and you have painted many more shadows than I have so I am happy to absorb whatever you feel like sharing. Besides, you’re not old, you’re “experienced.”

I'm old .. I don't go around mirrors anymore. And when I paint I lie .. I don't care what the shadows hold as I force them to hold what I give them and I make them subordinate to the scene.

I love your beautiful rich reds here, Donna. Your plums do resemble cherries and I think I've seen something similar at the farmer's market! But the shape and hues tell the story.

You've gotten so good with your abstracts - textures just good enough to eat!
