do you host the photos on google-pictures or do you tend to use a self hosted system!?

Dear friends on t he CreativeSparks-Site,

News from the "High-performance self-hosted photo and video management solution" – the project now with over 1,500 contributors. The roadmap is impressive – many, many things are still being implemented – and new features are being added. The community is very active and involved. This is driving the pace enormously: 🚀 Immich is developing rapidly, but is not yet stable. For this reason, it is highly advisable (and is repeatedly expressly recommended) not to use it as the sole location for backing up your images/videos.

Question: how do you host your images - i am currently musing about the setup of a new version - the self hosted option - that runs immich.

i am currently not very sure bout the pros and cons - so perhaps we can discuss it here. We can discuss the options - to switch from Google-photos to a self hosted system - and i would be glad to see a fruitful discussion

look forward to hear from you.. here the immich - system

New - Version 1.143.1 - released a few days ago:

Some features in development or planned for 2025:
  • Fine access controls - very helpful (granular access controls)
  • Simple image editing - intuitive and beginner-friendly (“basic editor”)
  • Private/locked photos/media (“private/locked photos”) with various additional protection mechanisms
  • Automatic grouping of burst photos - a great feature (“auto stacking”)

New features already implemented:

  • Native video playback, HDR videos fully supported
  • Automatic database backups
  • Tags for photos/videos, folder structure/folders, album sync from mobile device to server

...according to the roadmap and user reports, these points will be available in mid/late 2025...see roadmap link below!

A comparison of the systems – as a first approximation:

🔹 Immich – Open source, self-hostable, RAW support, face/object recognition, full data sovereignty. Ideal for communities that take archiving and privacy seriously. Still under construction, but very active – the development pace is extremely fast. 🚀

🔹 Google Photos – Super convenient, powerful AI search (“Ask Photos”), clever editing tools (Magic Eraser, HDR). Perfect for everyday use and sharing, but RAW is limited and cloud-bound;

🔹 Prisma – Creative, spectacular filters & style transformations. Fun, but not an archiving/workflow tool – others can do that better.
