Did you buy your new airplane or a painting?

From the New York Times:

“Nobody needs a $62 million van Gogh, and nobody wants to buy a lawsuit. If there’s any question about the painting’s ownership, people will buy a different artwork — or another airplane.”

Thomas C. Danziger, an art lawyer, on a van Gogh painting that sold at auction for $62 million and was claimed to be owned by a movie producer. It later vanished, with a trail leading to Caribbean tax havens and a jailed Chinese billionaire.

These kinds of reports always make me wonder what Vincent would think of the ridiculous amount of money his work sells for now. I hope he’s looking down and laughing and saying, “I knew my work was good!”
