December Field study

I made some tissue paper texture on a few 8x10 canvasses without any idea what I would use them for. Yesterday I took a photo of snowy fields and tried to do a landscape on top of that crazy texture. Oh boy! :ROFLMAO: It was fun but next time I'll probably do a more subtle texture effect, if any at all. Acrylic 8x10

Love this. Was the surface more absorbent than normal? The soft focus effect is great. I like it but maybe texture just for the field next time?

I've often thought of making the foreground textured/impasto and leaving the background flat. But I wonder if the painting would lose unity.

I like the composition with the trees and buildings at the base of the hill. The texture feels like snow swirling in the wind.
Perhaps a slight touch of the warm foreground light repeated in the sky?

I LOVE how this turned out. I used to do this kind of thing too with tissue paper. I love the texture it makes, but you knocked this out of the park I think! ♥️

John, thanks and yes, I will definitely think more carefully about where the texture should be applied next time. Maybe if there's texture in a field and a lesser amount of texture elsewhere it would hold together? Random blobs might be best for abstracts?

Patrick, great idea about adding some foreground color to the sky. Thanks

Arty, I'll bet you did some awesome works with tissue paper and if you still have any I'd love to see them. Painting over those blobs is a good way for me to give up fussy details - and also to help me learn to paint with my right hand. Who can tell if a line wobbles? Thank you.

I like this. Back when I used to do similar technique with gesso and marble dust. Really makes for unexpected texture but not in skies or lakes. It's good to experiment and most of all have fun.

Jo, your acrylic work is so good!

Wayne, texture is not a good thing in skies unless it's maybe very subdued, or so it seems. I can see how it would be an issue in a lake too.

I love this. It had a lovely wintry atmosphere with those soft colours and I just love the texture from the tissue paper.

They are so old, but maybe I'll post some. I considered them experiments, and they were pretty early on, but maybe I did a few in the early 2000s. Like this one, which is based on an aerial landscape:

Thanks Kay.

That's a great abstract, Arty, and I love the texture in the background! It looks like your texture is more uniform than the globs I produced - and I like the effect much better. Thanks for this.

I've done globs too, earlier on. I just don't have great pictures of them. I did them in the mid 80s. Some where I just stuck the tissue paper on without really trying to make them into the best "texture" yet. They were all watercolor. I think it works better with oils.

Here's an embarrassing sample:

I really don't mean to hijack your thread! :(

You're not hijacking my thread, Arty, I asked to see your work and I'm grateful that you're willing to share! I like what you did with tissue paper in all of these! No embarrassment needed - I would never think it possible to do this with watercolor. Thanks!

I think I just added them wet, maybe I used some gouache. I don't remember how I got it to stick. I probably just used the paint very thick.

Donna, I love your field study! I understand the point made here about controlling where the texture goes (keeping it out of the sky) but I'm not certain I agree. I love your sky in this one - like a moving, twisting cloud of snow covering the hillside. Love all those leading lines, too. The whole thing is eye candy to me.

Keep experimenting, you generally get great results like this! 👍

These are beautiful, Ayin! I love all three, but the first one is very captivating.

I love those textures and the range of greys and blues.
