The expression "the banality of evil" fits here. Just another old picture hangin' on their wall. How many victims of the Nazis hanged (or worse) in the making of this scene?

Well, the police went get it and it is gone. I have to say a close-up picture of that painting gave me a jolt. Rarely has a portrait done that. It is a very forthright portrait. For all its skill, it was a not flattering depiction, although it may be an accurate one. Well, we all can’t be beauty queens!

They found it and other works too!
The family members who had it are under house arrest and gonna be up in front of the court under charges.
Well then I amend my reaction. They may very well have been aware of what they had and how it got there. Lots of Nazis escaped to live out their comfy lives into S. America after the war. Still there and have enclaves that are pretty much totally fascist. I don't believe that the sins of the father should be visited on their kids UNLESS they too are guilty of carrying on any part of those sins.

BTW, I got to meet and talk with Stuart Eizenstat years ago. He was the main US guy responsible for long term artwork restitution fighting across the world courts for the rights of the victims. He made it clear that reacquisition was never easy nor simple, even where morally very straightforward. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_E._Eizenstat

I bet. I agree with you.
How fascinating to speak with that gentleman!
Have you ever watched the movie Monuments Men? True story. I really enjoyed it.
From the movie trailer overview:
During World War II, the Nazis steal countless pieces of art and hide them away. Some over-the-hill art scholars, historians, architects and other experts form a unit to retrieve as many of the stolen masterpieces as possible. The mission becomes even more urgent when the team learns about Hitler's "Nero Decree," which orders destruction of the artworks if the Third Reich falls. Caught in a race against time, the men risk their lives to protect some of mankind's greatest achievements.

Apparently they found 22 more stolen works at that family's home. And the Nazi father was known as one of the smugglers and brokers designated by the Reich to take stolen works to Argentina. So why wasn't their home examined for this decades ago?
