Art for the Season

I thought we might post here some favorite works of art for the season. I’ll start with these two paintings… The Nativity by Giotto and Joy to the World by Gennady Spirin:

I quite like the mood of these wintery landscapes by Maxfield Parrish.

I thought I’d throw in a painting by François Boucher… that is quite surprising for him:

If I didn’t recognize his handling of the faces… especially Mary’s… I would have thought this was a late Baroque painting… maybe Italian.

OK… here are a couple more favorites. Above is the Adoration of the Shepherds by Giorgione… one of my favorite paintings in The National Gallery of Art, Washington. Below is another painting of the same theme by Gerard van Honthorst.

In spite of the few positive responses, I now feel the need to apologise for a regrettable lapse in taste in posting that painting of a hunky Santa. I hope that posting this seasonal work of art by Harry Bush will rehabilitate my image as a respectable, upstanding member of this community.
