Animal And Wildlife Challenge Dec 2025/Jan 2026

Thanks, Joy. I was working on these too fast, l think. As it's only a sketch paper and if I mess it up the sketch paper won't forgive. It doesn't allow me to correct errors too much. They are just small sizes.

Thanks, Jade! 🙏
I find bears 🐻‍❄️ 🐻 difficult to draw/paint. Squirrels, too. This thread to practice is a good point to start learning.

Well you've done a great job with these two Grapes and especially the squirrel as Joy said. Really life like. 👌

I'm just working on the little dachshund sausage dog again in pencil only today to practice shading 🩶

Today's dog 🐶🐾🦴 shading is a work in progress lol

Sausage dog 🐕 very cute, you are so cute drawing animals. This dog have character. I think the overall drawing is very well done! 👍
Thanks for your comment on mine!

Jade, you mention often 'shading' and after doing a lot of thinking I still have problem with the concept, l don't really know what it is 🤔 meaning if you told me to do a drawing with shading l wouldn't be able to. When I draw or paint I always think of values and how to build values on each drawing/painting, l guess it's become a habit and I can't get rid of. I also compare values. Nevertheless, l've noticed that I lately tend to fail with my value approach. It's not easy by no means. These are just my thoughts 💭 ...

Thanks Grapes. 🐾 I enjoy drawing animals.

I think values is the right term! Yes, it isn't easy is it? The little dog has lots of lumps and bumps too!!

Jade, I'm also wondering about the hair in my own drawings/paintings. I don't really draw any hair in my animals (yet). It's so time consuming 😝 to put the hair. Often there's so much hair to draw. So, I've been thinking what to do?
Should we first establish the values or general shapes .. however each one of us starts the drawing and when the basic shapes are in then go indicating the hair?
Or should we draw the hair in from the very beginning?
🤪 .. as you can read I'm doing lots of thinking today 😁 💡

Jade - Lovely little dachshund. I don't think he's wonky. The photo was taken on an
angle.
Cheers
Patricia

Good question Grapes. There's some good YT videos on this topic.. I watched a few a while back but I've forgotten now lol and got a bit lazy too! It's definitely about creating an appearance rather than every hair from what I remember...
See this one for example Drawing fur I'll rewatch too!

Patricia, thank you!

Jade, thanks for your thoughts about fur. I'm not sure what she's doing on the video but can apply. I wonder if there's better/faster way to draw/paint fur. I haven't found on internet .. maybe it needs to be a quality workshop but I won't be able to pay one now. I had another fight yesterday with the fur of my cat portrait 😶‍🌫️ I guess all this try/fail is good for learning (?) 😄

Hi Grapes, there's other videos I found too but I haven't really mastered it yet (as you can see) 😄 if I find some good ones I'll let you know... it's tricky isn't it? I hope you won the fur fight!! 🐾 When I first started drawing animals on YouTube, lethalchris was good for starting out.. he said not to worry too much about hair placements, tho it was for slightly simpler pencil drawings. I think with the little dachshund, his fur is very silky and shiny too.

Thanks for the link Jade. It's an excellent tutorial.

Wow Jade, You captured the expression on the fish perfectly. His eye is
really well done.
Cheers

Thank you Patricia and Joy. It's an interesting one to draw, I look forward to seeing yours Joy. I was going to draw around all the white areas for the lines but decided a gellyroll pen was easier! 😅
