the Never Ending Story...

My dad's favorite when me and my sisters were little--

"It was a dark and stormy night, and all the little children were sitting around the campfire, and one of them said, 'Rufus, tell us a story.' And so Rufus began. 'It was a dark and stormy night...'"

Peculiar thing: my father told a very similar story when I was a kid:

"The night was dark and cold. Three robbers sat around their fire. The captain said to the lieutenant: 'Anthony, tell us a story.' The story began like this: the night was dark and cold..."

Clearly, our two stories have a common ancestor somewhere - it would be fascinating to trace its origins and evolution.
