Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-10

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.

  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

I cheated and sketched today for this as I doubt I will get another Halloween sketch before time. I was on my day out and sketched on the way to lunch with friends. In the Ohuhu sketchbook with Ohuhu .5 pen and watercolors. Skeletons are popular this year, I saw more on the way home but didn't take photos. Some were "huge".

Jo, thanks for the new list. They aren’t big on Halloween here so I won’t get a spooky scene like you found. Great that you got out to sketch!

Ai, love the figures on their devices! It’s always a captive audience.

Yes, thanks everyone.

Ai, perfect sub with the people on their digital items. Crazy how prevalent it is, eh? You have some good perspective and lines. Applause.

Joan, maybe you will find a pumpkin or cat or pointy hat or broom??? I love your double. Makes me want one of those eclairs. Yummy.

JoC — Fun list, thanks, much to choose from 😂
Oo, scary Halloween scene, been seeing a few like that around here too 😳🤣 Your sketch is great, and therefore scary 😍

Ai — Super sketches of people on their devices 📲 You really caught that often-felt, modern sense of being near others, yet isolated 😌

Joan — Oh dear, eclairs 😍 you made them soooo creamy, sigh - wonderfully tempting sketch 😋😋

Ai, thanks. At least here I buy something a little decadent to sketch.

Jo, thanks. They were good but not outstanding. I was disappointed in the chocolate one.

Pine Cone, they were good models. They didn’t move. Lol

I started sketching this couple and I don’t think the realized it until another couple walking by stopped to look and said “It’s that couple!” And pointed right at them. My cover was blown. The did come over to look, but before the background was done. I try to always do the part that might move away first.

Joan, uh oh. You did a good job on the diners anyway. Applause. I like the view through the arch of the gondola. Lovely.

We are starting our day late so see if I get to sketch.

Jo, grazie mille.

We are leaving Venice in the morning for Milan. We will be flying home from there on Saturday. Maybe I will get to post something from the hotel.

Joan: I ditto Jade... a very HAPPY holidays indeed... so gorgeous in all sketches. I esp. love the Yonder as I feel like I have stumbled onto something very enchanting.

Mmm, Joan, I love all three of these finds for the Hunt. They are perfect renditions as well. The dry docked gondolas are so interesting. The red and white table cloths are so right.

I hadn't sketched so I did a quick one here after I posted. In the large Conda sketchbook about half a page with a Pilot ball point pen. Number 1 thumb.

Robin: Nice manniquin... now your cool sketch reminds me that I also have a wooden art manniquin too.

NedL, Jade:
Thanks.

Jo - Thanks for the list. Smiled seeing you included the flag in Halloween sketch.. Great thumb sketch!👍🏽

Ai - A good sub. As Pine Cone said it is a too common sight. Great proportions. You do people so well. Guess having all those students to model unknowingly helps.😁 Fun Halloween items.

Joan - Love the highlights on the eclair. Laughed at your comment to PineCone about good models. Readinjg your next comment about drawing things that might move first., made we wonder….did you draw the eclairs before the plate? 😎. For me the eclairs would have moved quickly, the vaporetto area does feel like a peek behind the curtain. Love the waterside cafe.

Robin - like ai I forgot about mannequin Until seeing yours. Like the combo of Ink and color pencil.

Sorry kind of drifted off the last few days of the last hunt. Logged in this morning to see I had comments I never sent. Thought that was strange as the problem is usually losing comments. Hoping to do better in this hunt.

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch.

Joan — Each of these new paintings makes me smile, drenched in color as they are, filled with energy and peace 🎨 Thank you so very much for taking us along with you to Italy 😂 Safe journey home, and be sure to get your rest….. 😴

JoC — Your thumbs are beautiful - graceful lines, wonderful shading and so well drawn ☀️

Ai — Boo !!! 👻 Fantastic, fun, happy Halloween sketches 🎃 Look at them, so clever the way you’ve arranged them all, and look at all the shape and details of that bat 🦇 Luv them all, very cool group, beautifully painted 😎

Robin — Fun still life, and the mannequin looks happy, swinging his feet 😌

Fletch — I’m with you, Joan’s eclairs wouldn’t have stood a chance 😇
