Scavenger Hunt from Life #170: Sep 11 - Sep 23

This was a bit of a mess from the get go... never any "good if I stop now". I think I know what to do different. Maybe I'll try again but I already bought some garlic for tomorrow...

Edit: haha it looks a little better posted here. In person it kind of hurts my eyes to look at! :)

Ned, I couldn't find the white Joan had I got a :
pigment.inti (says on one side)
Baoke ( on the other side)
Seems to work pretty well. Really like the herring can. I have a feeling it would taste like sardines, so ..... not for me. The sneaker/shoe is great. Fun colors! I bought garlic, too. Ha. Haven't sketched it yet. Like to do it in pastels.

Joan, I will try to remember the Posca markers.

I thought of sketching today but .....

Ned, the shoe came out really great! I love the colorful look to it and you did well with the design. I would think that maybe on a smaller scale in your sketchbook it might have looked a bit overpowering, but it looks great on the computer screen.

Jo, the Posca markers come in a variety of points. I have one that is fine and another that is extra fine. That one has a different kind of nib and I don't know how well it will work. In the fine one the nib can be removed and cleaned off if any color gets on it.

Trying to get organized for our trip, so sketching for the hunt has been limited. I spent a lot of time replacing and getting our new printer hooked up to wi-fi. Anything technical takes forever to straighten out. I need a tec person of my own on call. We needed to print some documents for the trip. I did something outdoors yesterday but can't even remember what I did, but I don't think it fit any of the items. lol See you all later.

Jo -- I think my daughter has some of those Baoke gel pens at home. I borrowed one to mark a fishing rod blank and it worked much better than a china marker. Like "white out" we used to use for typing. I'll look next month when I'm back home. I do like the white gouache that I added to my palette from suggestions here....

Joan -- thanks, you're exactly right! On screen I like it, in person overpowering is a good word for it. I'm going to look for a fine posca too. Setting up a printer can be trouble even for someone with decades of tech experience! I hope Venice is wonderful again.

Joan -- I chuckled that you drew what you saw with the can on the left. I like the way the blue and white and the straight lines stand out from the natural greens and tans.

There is fresh pasta and and vegetables and pesto in the fridge. I forgot sourdough to make garlic bread. I'll go to the store tomorrow and get some. Uniball vision micro pen ( I usually use the regular size one ), ink wash, WC, Strathmore Visual Journal

Joan, love the white house with the blue and white awnings. Details on the side are perfect. Homey place .. looks comfy. Hope the printer worked. Lucky I have Joanna for backup tech support. I'm excited for your trip!

Ned, the garlic is so perfect. I like the wooden table, too. The meal sounds delish. May have to go Italian tomorrow.

Ned, I'm glad you have plans for that head of garlic. Nice sketch showing the bumpy cloves!

Jo, thanks. I've sketched that house with the blue striped awning quite a few times. The foliage in front now blocks a lot of the view. There is a big window and a porch with some comfy chairs that you can no longer see. I wonder if the foliage blocks their view too. I guess it gives them some privacy, but I would definitely want a view of the marina and the water.

Joan, beautiful tribute to summer. Love the grasses, fence, water, sky, birds, etc. Ha. So lovely.

I played in the pasted dust finally. On a wiped off Pastelbord, 9 x 12 It is a little darker than I planned. I lightened it and played with the colors with photoshop just to see, you can see it in the pastel forum.
Number 2 empty container - oil bottle (I made it a little taller that it is for composition)
Number 3 red - apple and Number 4 - garlic

Set up below.

Jo, thanks! Lovely to see you working in the dust again. Love the red of the apple against that varied dark background. The empty bottle is nice and I think I can smell the garlic from here. ;)

Super sketches/art works you all: PineCone, Joan, Jo, Ned, Robin

Ai, Joan, Robin, Ned, Vivien, JoC, Fletch, Ned, Jade, joe1lt — Thanks for your kind comments and encouraging words 🙏☀️ It means more than you can know ❤️

Joan — It was great to see the artists working on their projects…so focused… and then see the finished pieces. They are all amazing and fun, and made me smile 😂 No wonder they were a big hit 😍 Will you guys be doing that again next year ?🙏?🙏? Yours is very special with its quality, and details, and gorgeous teals and shading in blue, WOW!!!
Very cool NYC sketches - I got an amazing feel of their scope from the way you sketched each. I hope your back continues to improve 🙏
Face painting!!! 🥰 and beautiful steeple nestled in among the trees - and another impossible continuous line, wow, three in one, and beautiful colors added as well ☀️ Love the blue awning sketch as well, cosy 🏡
Your beach scene is superb, with the fencing, so real, giving way, and the summer heat still strong, birds still high in a white and blue autumn sky, over the white-cap waves, looking for shore….. the seasons change, and you always bring us those transistions with such fidelity and joy…..
Adding what you said about humidity when we work in our mobile studios, to what JoC explained, and it all adds up 🌧️😳🤣🌦️
Great sketches of Hector, what a guy!!! And you’re making those neocolors look easy, even with those colorful and complicated clothes 👘
I’m looking forward to seeing what you create on your trip, but I know you’ll be busy, so no worries if you can’t post ❤️

Ned — I apologize, because I had to laugh about your cherry picker story, but it’s so true 😌
Oh dear, that plant looks familiar. You’ve drawn and painted it beautifully. Looks so cheerful and welcoming 😆 I think I walked right by some (and possibly right *through* some) the day before you posted this 😳 But I seem to be alive, so no worries lol ☀️
Super transparency and 3Dness on your butter dish.
At first glance, I thought your oyster gizmo was perhaps an ancient African carving of some kind - at this point I have no real idea what it actually is, but I love the way you painted it, and the gaffelbiter is gorgeous.
Great vibe from the baseball diamond - Can feel the heat of the sun, the gravel underfoot, hear the folks on the sidelines… fantastic sketch that evokes so much more 👍
Wow, your sneaker is fantastic, and the more I see of your painted sketches, the more enamored I am of your sense of color. Ditto on your graceful sketch of garlic 🧄

Jade — Your tender sketch of the soft little “pinto” kitten tugs at my heart 🖤🤍🐾 Her eyes are amazing… not sure why you might have re-done them ???
You are such a kind person - doing cards and crochet for people - your strawberries made my day - lovely and made of kindness 🍓🧶 and here’s another cat, wearing clothes and jewelry proudly 👍
Your human faces are very special, capturing the inner mood as well as the outer shapes.

Vivien — I keep coming back to your lovely foods. You’re so talented. I can’t pick a fav….. I’ve been studying them all, including your superb shadows. A lot of times, I get discouraged with shadows, and leave them out completely. Your shading of color and shadow is superb. To me, these all look like they should be in frames 🙏😂 I hope your weather is behaving better by now ??? Sorry about your daffs ❤️‍🩹

Ai - Oh my, your zebra and giraffe walkie talkies are too adorable for words !!! I LOVE them
❤️🤎🤍🖤🧡
Super colors and depth and ellipses with the bottles. Fun sketchbook and textbook. The book reminds me what a multi-talented person you are. The tram models are amazing, and your sketch is superb ☀️ Thanks for telling us about them ❤️

Fletch — Zowie!!! What a nice candle - love the color and shading, and “heft” 👍 You haven’t lost a thing, and the depth you achieve in your graphite sketches has followed you here to this candle 😍 I’m with you and JoC - I’ve been disappointed with Strathmore paper in the past 😐
I will have to check out Michelangelo’s sketches - I have loved da Vinci’s all my life, and can never see them often enough. But Michelangelo has escaped me. I also need to look up Australian Dream and back exercises ☀️

JoC — Good sketches of footwear - lots of difficult angles, and lots of cool shoes 😊 I hope your great grand has fun learning about Dino 😁🦕 Super quality and composition at Gene’s PT, and excellent bottle ellipses. I love your pastel, as well as your Photoshop edit - beautiful, lovely work and as always, I love the background too - wonderful ☀️

joe1lt — There’s Donald !!! 👋 Hi Donald 😁 Love your sketches - such easy, happy lines, no matter how difficult the angles 👍 super sketches ☀️

Robin — Love your sketches - space to walk around, and sit, and enjoy - fun sketches ☀️

Enjaw — Welcome 👋

Ai, thanks. How fun that they have models of the Thai trams on the counter. They gave you a fun subject for sketching!

Pine Cone, I appreciate your catching up and making comments on all my sketches. :D I know it takes a long time to go through all the posts and say something about each of them. Your words are always so special.

I found an autumnal sketching spot for the first full day of fall at a plant nursery nearby.

Joan -- I love that beach path, and happy to see it in all its moods. That is my favorite kind of painting, because it makes me want to be there. The fall pumpkin stand is just great!

Jo -- the apple looks like we could reach out and take a bite! Love the garlic and I like what you did with the bottle.

Ai -- that is so cool. It made me stop and try to imagine what Bangkok would have been like with those street trolleys. Nice sketch!

Pine Cone -- thanks! You made me happy because somehow the hot sun at 2nd base came through in my sketch :) I'm a beginner with watercolors and folks here remember when I was afraid to even try color. Like today, I didn't realize that the brown background wouldn't contrast with the reddish orange chair until I started putting it in. I tried to make it darker, but that didn't really help. It looked better before the brown... but no big deal. It's fun to try!

I'm glad I found by grandfather's old hammer. I've been replacing the wheel bearings on my boat trailer, and the steel hammer I've been using for that is covered in bearing grease and is not allowed anywhere near my sketchbook! My favorite hammer is in California, a ball peen hammer that was also my grandfather's. It has a hundred year old hickory handle like iron.

With the foreshortening and perspective, I found this very difficult.

edit: :) unlike the shoe, this one looks better in person. The handle isn't so yellow and the background behind and below the chair is a colder brown.

Thanks, Joan. Your pumpkin stand is so nice. I like they were in watermelon boxes. Good recycling. Pumpkins outside here will cook! I saw a few plastic ones up yesterday.

Ai, love the train. You captured a piece of history. Thanks for the new Hunt.

Pine Cone, thank you. Appreciate all your comments. Lots of time in checking us all out!

Thanks to you, Ned. Ahhh, your hammer is special. Yep, perspective is hard on that type of tool. You did a good job. The yellow looks good to me.

Ned, thanks for your comment. Great job on the old hammer....glad it was clean enough to bring over by the sketchbook. Nice job on the wood grain on the handle. You have found some great family treasures lately!!

Ai, will go over and check out the new hunt. Thanks.

Jo, many thanks. I never though of the pumpkins and what would happen out in severe heat...instant pumpkin pies???
