Scavenger Hunt from Life #166 July 25 - Aug 06 2025

Jo, thanks for your comments. Enjoy the slow day.

Ai, it is always gratifying to have people appreciate and buy my artwork. It is especially nice when I see their reaction/connection to a piece. Hope you decluttering helps. I find that my art materials don't like to stay put. I think they move around when I'm asleep. lol

Jade, it is so easy to make errors with names. I understand.

Joan - Congratulations on the sales! I think I remember one her that had Flo’ s Famous in it, I know Iloved the Msin Streetone because it drew me in. I wanted to walk down there. You are a terrific artist. Happy others appreciate and are willing to pay to own it.

Jade - screwing up names here is easy. I changed mine to try to help. I was Joe and we also had Jo, Joe1 and Joan. So you can see how that went. Plus I sign my art Fletch. Oh and I was called Jim by more than one person as my login is jmfletch which looks like Jim to some. We are a friendly group who just like drawing from life. 😎

Hehe Fletch. It's also a bit tricky remembering who to reply to! I get that feeling 😊

Fletch, thanks. I've painted "Flo's Famous" many times, so it was nice to have one sell. The person who bought it lives down the street from it. It is well loved around here and has been around since 1926. Families have been going there for generations, especially after the beach which is right down the street.

Jade, it is good to have a unique name like yours so it doesn't get mixed up much. lol

Had all kind of plans to draw today but life interfered. Even the stuff I planned was poorly planned. For Sunday dinner was planning something new and special. Lemon Garlic Shrimp. ( Publix has shrimp on sale). Forget even frozen raw shrimp have to be shelled and deveined. Whole day went that way. Hope you all enjoyed a nice quiet Sunday.
Keep sketching and learning

Fletch, some days you just have to go with the flow.

Ai, wish you could come declutter my space .. actually the whole house.

Hi, Jade.

Fletch, shrimp sounds good but too much work. I would buy the deveined ones. Ha. Hi to Sharon.

Joan, love the hand in neocolors , looks soft. Clever and neat colors on the curved.

I did a quick sketch in the Conda Sketch Pad using my footstool inside for a table. I went out on the porch but only about 10 minutes, too hot.
Number 1, hand and Number 2, place setting with Micron 03

#5 gate or entry to one of temple buildings of Yanawa Temple, Bangkok...It is a challenge to sketch a Thai temple...too many detail patterns...done with pencil+wc+ fountain pen ink...about 40 minutes on location and 10 minutes more in an indoor cafe for adding ink.

Jo, it looks like you're getting ready to set the table. Nice sketch of the place setting. Hope it cools off a bit for you. We are expecting temps in the high 90s the next few days.

Ai, your work on the details of the temple and the gate is impressive. I get so lost in how to convey the details without making myself crazy in scenes like that. Bravo!

Joan: Thanks. Love your pink hand and curve pen with playful neocolor...

Jade & all: Thanks.

Jo: Thanks. After donate great stuffs for 5 big sacks, and throw away... about 2 big trash bins ... My home still left with 99% stuffs... Jo, I don't know if I could be any help to your decluttering...LOL

Painted on the back side of pizza box lid. I try to get back at gouache... I opened my Holbein Gouache up, uhm... a few tubes were gone... I did not even remember using any of them.... Oh well I did try them again today... about 8x10 inch, and took about 40 minutes.

PS. the digital picture seems to look better than the real one...

#6 wet -- inside of a passion fruit
#7 dry -- outside of a passion fruit
#8 corner -- angles between two sepals of the tomato
#9 flat ... well almost flat ... the plate, I run out of pink or purple...so I had to put down blue gouache for the plate

Joan - nice hand with the neocolor. Love how you captured soft texture on the hand and hard texture in the open.

Jo - super hatching on the hand and place setting

Ai - Temple painting is beautiful. Cool to see how the pen lines add to the painting. The fruit dish still life is delicious. 😋 Love the shading especially on the tomato.

#1 hand - quick sketch with .5mm mech pencil than added some 2B to get contrast. Drawn in the pocket sketchbook.

I switched photo to B&W when I resized to look at contrast and apparently forgot to switch back

Keep sketching and learning

Jo, I think it got up to 96 degrees today. Jerry had a doctor's appointment and then we went to lunch. As soon as we got home I headed to the pool and I was there until 6:00. It felt great!

Ai, thanks. Maybe I will keep the Neocolors around just for play... You did well with the gouache on the pizza box. Nice sketch of the fruit on the plate...makes me want to grab a piece.

Fletch, thank you. Your hand in pencil looks great. We have similar hand poses.

I was at the pool and decided to do a Procreate sketch. Of course this man had been sitting in the same spot for about an hour, but about 10 minutes into my sketch he got up and moved...so typical!
9 - dry on the pool's edge - Procreate

Fletch: Thanks. Super hand sketch in graphite.

Joan: Thanks. I love your pool water reflection of the man's legs... Awesome.

Jade and all : Thanks.

Ai, someone on wetcanvas used to paint on cereal boxes all the time. Good idea to use the pizza box. I love the tomato and the other fruit. Nice ellipses. Thanks for encouraging me to declutter. You are no actual help however. Evil grin.

Fletch, nice hand. Looks strong with your line work.

Joan, we sweltered together about the same here. Happy to be inside! Great digi sketch. I like the background and flowers, too. As Ai said, nice water and reflections.

Respite day tomorrow, will spend it at the dentist. Crown and a pulling. Ouch. At least I like the dentist.

EveryoneI’m sorry it took me so long to thank you all for your kind comments on SH #165. I finally finished commenting and responding, so I posted it there, but also here…..

LAST BUNCH OF COMMENTS FOR PREVIOUS EVENT, SH #165:

JoC
— Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts, and thanks also for reminding me that I’ve been on a plein air adventure. I hadn’t even realized it !!! (Happy dances 😄)
I meant to thank you earlier for the advice about how to paint glass and reflections. I never knew that, and it makes sense 🎨
I also meant to ask you to leave the “darks” if you keep working on the bear pastel, as that is part of what makes this so deep and special. The exceptional nature of your painting, and its lighting, remind me of “Girl With a Pearl Earring” (Vermeer I think).
And your hand sketch of you drawing your hand sketch is great, and made me smile 👌Loved the way you sketched that ceiling with a metal roof.

Jade — Thanks so much for your kind comment 😌
Lovely blue mug and I like the shape of the stars. You did well on those difficult ellipses.
Nice breezy style for your sketch of the lavender flower…
And look at Bob !!! 🤎🖤🤍💚 What a adorable rascal 🐈 … and there’s more of Bob — sketches and photo — and another cat as well👋 In my opinion, there can never be too many animal sketches. Plus, tabby cats have a very special place in my heart 🧡🤎🤍🖤💚 (as do horses). FWIW, I really felt that in post #85, you’d reached a peaceful and thoughtful evolution with the whole process of drawing cats, that translated onto the page in a compelling way. Very, very well done. I like the simplicity of your continuous line, as well as the connection between the cup and the book.

Ned and lurkers👋

Fletch — What a lovely bowl — knowing its history, the way you drew it seems quite touching to me. It’s a beautiful and sensitive capture of what looks to be a well-loved treasure 😌

Joan — Thank you so much for your kind comments. You, and everyone here, help me keep trying… 😌
Amazing continuous line sketches of the parking lot and the biker — good grief, you make complicated things look like a breeze 😂 Luv your crazy pencil sketch (aren’t they all 😄) and your deep brown ink sketches made me smile, as did your rogue sketch of the storyteller and her audience of sketchers 👏 I keep running out of words… beautiful secluded scene, gorgeous dahlias that I’ve been back to see over and over, and impressive “Frank” building scene 🎨

Ai — Thanks so much for your kind comments, and for hosting this fun event 😌
Your brown ink sketches are wonderful and made me smile. I love that brown ink too 🟤Your gorgeous sketch of yellow and red flowers stunned me. Superb in every way. From the amazing green shades of the leaves, to the detailed flowers, and the excellent shadows, wowow!!! Fun and excellent workout sketch, and also enjoyed seeing your amazing new sketch of that building, with the step-by-step images. Super instructive, and much appreciated 🙏 Lovely mall plant capture too.

Robin — Fun group of bold, uplifting sketches, with cool objects, and angles, and points of view 😎 The curvy statue is wonderful with those beautiful colors and lines, and the little bird steals the show !!! Good to see the gentle green of the lovely “wisdom” group of sketches… a healing group of sketches in fact, with just the right touch of yellow 🙏 and your gourds look like sunshine itself ☀️

Ai & Jo, thanks for your comments on the pool sketch.

Pine Cone, thanks for posting your comments here for the last sketch. I think I might have missed them otherwise.

We are in for another hot day. Normally my plein air group meets on Tues mornings, but I decided not to go and sit there in the heat. I'll sketch something indoors before I go to the pool at noon for a few hours. That counts as my exercise for the day, so I don't like to miss that. See you all later.

2 - “a corner” - swallows’ nests

I’m still in Phase 1 of my Drawing Rehab Plan. Lines and ellipses. The swallows’ nests in the first sketch were high up in a protective corner, but it seems like nobody was home.

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)

— cheap sketchbook by PenGear (from WalMart)

— freehand — I don’t use a ruler to make lines, but rulers are valid artistic tools and I don’t wish to discourage their use.

SH166 - 2 - swallow nests.png

3 - “building” - top edge of a rock wall

The second sketch is the top edge of a tall rock wall on the building near the swallows’ nests, and when I started, there were several birds sitting way up there. I think they were some of the swallows, but I’m not positive. And they flew away before I could sketch them.
