Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-9

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Fletch, thanks for the list and the sign up update. Hope to play here.

Jade, fun to be first and to do with the handy hand. I do like doing my hands.

Ai, love the round cup and saucer. I haven't had any like that for my collection. I like the lines on your books, glass case and hand. Almost waving to Jade!

Fletch — Thanks for a fun list, and good to know you’re getting rested.

Everyone - I still haven’t finished commenting and responding, but hopefully can do that tomorrow.

————————-

1 - “curved” - eye on a giant TJ Maxx bag

With my Re-Learning to Draw Plan, I’m still working on the First Phase, which is re-learning to draw lines and circles and curves. Except that until now, I’ve mostly drawn lines, and hardly any circles or curves. So Fletch’s list gave me the encouragement to draw a curved eye from a giant TJ Maxx bag.

It’s the middle of the night and I can’t really take a pic of my beat up bag, but to my shock and amazement, I found pics online 😃

— Procreate app

— iPad Pro with Apple pencil

— 5 brushes from the standard Procreate brushes

— made significant modifications to one of the brushes (more about that below)

— freehand……. I never use the Procreate feature that straigtens lines, or rounds out circles for the artist. Also, I never use the grid overlay that Procreate offers. However, those are valid artistic tools, and I don’t wish to discourage their use.

—————————-

Before I began to sketch the eye on the bag, I modified one of the standard Procreate brushes to use for the sketch.

Then, to test the brush, I did a few gray-scale doodles. So the first image below shows the whole page that contains the gray-scale warm-up doodles, along with my SH sketch (in the bottom right corner).

NOTE: Because I’m re-learning to draw lines, curves and circles (and reading about the ocean ☺️ ) I used creative license with a couple of areas in my sketch. I hope that’s okay.

And here’s the actual sketch…..

Here’s the pic I found online of the same bag I have…..

Ai, nice ellipsis in your cup and saucer! Nicely done. Your hand and the books and eyeglass case are good too. Looks like ghost people are jogging in the park. lol Fun sketch!

Pine Cone, I love that eye!!! Perfect choice for a background color. It would make a great t-shirt design.

1 - wet rocks - watercolors and ink
2 - something you hear (falling water)

3 - rectangular windows - watercolors
4 - flat siding on the house
5 - corner of the cooler (on right)
6 - table (on left)

Hi Robin, PineCone, June, Fletch, Ai, Jo - glad you liked my hand.
I love the colours on your eye, PineCone. And the delicate design.
June - gorgeous pictures. I like the black outlines on the first one too.
Ai - really like your cup and saucer and hand drawing, waving to me! 😄 Yes, I like the dark one and that Joan said about ghost people!
Robin - hope the cleaning was ok!

Jade - Love the hatching on the hand and nice proportions.

Robin - my theory of housework is it will still be there tomorrow when you would have to fo it all again anyway.

Ai - Cup and saucer are good but you have me conditioned to look for the design in the matcha tea.😎. Nice proportions and line work on the hand and the book stack. The ghosts in the park made me laugh.

Pine Cone - Fun eye digi. Think you know from our past discussions that I am not a big fan of abstract in general, but when I scrolled down to your image my first thought was “That is a cool abstract. Great movement.” 👍🏽

Joan - Beautiful little water feature. Where is that? Love the colors and implied detail. Nice combo sketch.

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Jade, thanks!

Fletch, thanks so much. The waterfall was in a serenity garden in a park in the town of Islip. My sketch group met there the other night.

Update on the paintings from the plein air event. The painting I did of the Main Street in Bellport sold. IMG_8039.jpeg.IMG_8072.jpeg

I also sold a small painting of a beach food stand, Flo's Famous, but I can't find a photo of it to show you.

Pine Cone, oh fun. Love the eye and your lines to the upper left of your sketch. Would be fun for t-shirt. I like your "find".

Ai, I like the park sketch a lot. Looks like spirit people without color. I love the tree shapes. I'm smiling.

Joan, the rock falls is beautiful. I like the technique you used for the water. Sigh.... The porch with the coolers, chairs and table was a good find. Congrats on the two sales. Applause. I like the Main street a lot.

Hi Jade and Fletch.

Slow day tomorrow, hope to sketch.

All: Thanks for kind comments of my park piece... The rain was chasing us... so need to leave the park in a hurry.

Jo, Jade, Fletch, Robin and all : Hello.

Joan: Super waterfall on the wet rock, and the house sideding with purple flower plants... love the plants.... Congratulations on the sales. The buyers are lucky to have your works.

We were busy home decluttering, having 5 big sacks to donate and dropping them at the donation center. So not much going on from me. Yes, my art materials are in all rooms of the house.... sigh.
