Scavenger Hunt from Life #164: Jul 01 - Jul 13

Ai, thanks so much. It looks like you made the best of your clutter by doing a great sketch of it. Thanks for the progress photos of the painting. It came out great! I like the one of your supply caddy too! Most of my art clutter is in too many different locations. I would have to gather it to do a sketch like that...although I do have some on my table. lol

Pine Cone, thanks so much for that tutorial on the Procreate shapes. I saved it for myself until I can go into the program and change those settings. I hope that will help! You're a supernova!!

Jo, I'm glad the kids were there for the 4th...and to celebrate Joanna's birthday. I know finding time to sketch is difficult when Gene needs the extra attention. I'm glad you had some respite care come in for a few hours. Will the same person come back, or will it be a different person? I'm sure it would help ease your mind if it is the same person that he liked. Having time like that once in a while is important for you. I like your fun sketches of the food truck area and the fire trucks. (It gave you a reason to sneak in a little red. lol)

Yesterday my friend and I went into the city for a quickly planned urban sketching session. Our group usually doesn't plan something on holiday weekends, so Suzala informed the group where we were going and invited anyone who wanted to join us. A few other sketchers did join us. We headed down near Washington Square Park. There is an iconic Village Cigar building there that is no longer a cigar store. Part of it is being converted into a coffee shop, but it looks like they are keeping the outside of the building the same.

We bought lunch and heading into the park. Usually we head over to the Washington Square Arch, but it was too sunny and there was no shade there. I heard music and suggested heading over to sketch the musicians. This sketch took quite a while because it was like sketching 4 portraits. The musicians moved around a lot and they each took breaks to come around to collect tips from the people listening. I painted them one at a time, just in case they decided to quit playing. That way I would at least have a few of them done. The group was called Jazz NYC 55.

Hi everyone, thanks. Gene has PT today and I get off so may get to sketch. Still rainy today. The big dangerous flooding was west of us. So much rain in small areas in an hour or so causing the huge flash floods. Like a tsunami. All of us are in safe areas. Poor folks.

Joan your day out was fantastic. Joanna always sells merch for the bands/singers and passes their jar around. We haven't been for a while to live music. Great job on the sketch. The Cigar store/coffee shop is my kinda place ... red and coffee. Love the bottles, too. Great to see and hear about the day.

Joan: Wow... Super on all the cigar building, the musical scene, and of course those happy bottles.

Jo:
Hello... Glad to hear that you and Gene are safe and well.

Jo, thanks. I'm hoping that your rain is a needed help. Glad you are not near the flooding. My heart breaks for those families affected by the flooding. It happens so quickly and takes everything in its path. I'm glad you get some sketch time when Gene gets PT. Hope it works out today.

Ai, I had some opportunities to sketch and I went for them. lol It was fun and good to be in the city with all of the activities going on in the park. Some day I'm going to sit and sketch the groups that sit and play chess. There are games going on constantly.

Wow! Joan, Jazz NYC 55 is fantastic! It has rhythm and balance and the way the background and foreground work together is just excellent. Bravo! I was admiring the lobster and then saw that one! It looks like the lettering in village cigars was made by painting around the paper white? That one is great too. But the NYC 55 takes the prize!

Pine Cone -- I like the supernova background too.... not the usual behind a gas station :) fantastic

Ai -- really neat to see the progression on the sketchbook shelves. That came out great. I laughed when you wrote you lost some pens because you sure drew a lot! Good job on clutter, I like the contrast in that one. I often notice great contrast in Joan's sketches too...I wish I could remember some of these things better when I'm sketching... somehow my mind "turns off" and it's hard to think of things while I'm sketching. I think of them later!

Jo -- I like the colorful sketches. You often get great contrast too!

I'm driving to Idaho tomorrow and there is no internet or cell phone at the cabin. I'll only have access to the internet when I go to town for groceries or on my way somewhere. I'll be there for about a month. In a little more than a week, I'm flying to Michigan for 5 days for a wedding, and I'll have internet during that trip but probably be pretty busy visiting family I haven't seen in years. My wife and daughter are meeting me there so it will be fun! Then later this summer we'll all be back here in Washington....

I had a chance to join a few of my art friends at the Artist house by BangLuang canal. I got this one for 3.5 hours... I must be super slow in urban sketching as I have been away from it for a few weeks. This is done in a spread of A5 local sketchbook.

#5 boat (part of a Thai long tail boat, on left)
#6 sub. a troll with a red belly uncle statue
#7 sub. a tree with bougainvillea plant in the middle

Ned, thanks so much for your comments. The jazz musicians were fun to do, especially since we were hearing their music and watching the people react to it. The sax player and bass player were the easiest since they were standing the whole time. The guitar player kept getting up and sitting down, and the guy on drums was blocked a lot of the time. But it was like doing 4 separate sketches. lol Yes, the sign on the Village Cigars was done by painting around the letters for the most part. I lost the white in a few small spaces and touched it up with a white Posca marker. Enjoy your trips to the cabin and the wedding. Check in if you can.

Ai, great sketch with so many things in it! The red belly uncle statue is different. Aside from being red he looks like a life-sized human. Super work on all of it...glad you got out with your group. That is so inspiring when you're working.

Ned: Thanks so much... Have a great time with nature and with your family.

Joan: Thank you. Nice continuous ink lines of keys, and clutter.

Joan -love the crowd on the upper deck of the ferry. The lobster is ultra realistic especially for watercolor. The band painting and the converted but preserved cigar shop are great. Nice bottle collection 😎. You are amazing at all these techniques that are suppose to be challenges. (Continuous line, non-dominant hand, blind contour - need a Bronx cheer emoji here. )

Pine Cone, thanks for the info on toggling QuickShape.

Ai - super job turning your clutter into beauty. Love the series. Wow on the Art House painting!

Jo- Nice little Bastrop views. Foundry statues look really interesting.

Ned - you will be missed while you are away. Hope you enjoy!

Hi to Robin, Joe and other art friends

Keep sketching
Fletch

Fletch, thanks for your comments...the Bronx cheer emoji made me laugh.

Pine Cone, I followed your directions and it seems to have solved the problem. I did a test shape and the sides didn't straighten. :) Thanks!!

JoC — I'm so glad you and your family are safe ❤️‍🩹 What terrible weather chaos covers our Earth these days 🥹🙏 Your three lovely "respite" sketches have filled my heart - it's nice that you and Gene have that option, and that your first try went well for both of you *hugs*. I keep coming back to look at the second sketch with its cheerful colors and serene atmosphere 😊 I smiled at your descriptions of the foundry animals, and your sketch of the fire trucks and buildings is super ☀️

Joan — Your sketches of the cigar building, the jazz musicians and the lager 6-pack knocked my socks off 😃 Fantastic work all around on all three paintings. With the details (like the glancing white diagonals), and the distant background, I felt like I was there crossing the street to the cigar shop. A scene jam-packed with life. Ditto Ned for your fantastic portraits of the jazz players, and lovely work on the interesting 6-pack, and echoing Joe's Bronx cheer 👏🎨 I'm looking forward to your sketch of some chess players😄 and your continuous line sketches are amazing ☀️ I'm glad that the Procreate idea helped 😅 With all the different versions of Procreate, and all the different iPads, etc., I wasn't sure if it would work, whew 😅

Ned — lol, thanks so much 😄 it was fun to do 💫 Have fun with your various travels, and with your family !!! Stay safe ☀️

Ai — Wow, gorgeous urban sketch, love the scene and the colors - amazing sketch ☀️

Fletch — Thanks, it was fun to do, and also a good reminder for myself ☀️

Joan, yowza on the keys. Likewise the clutter!

Ned, have fun in Idaho. We have a friend near Sandpoint in the summer. Thanks.

Ai, your red belly uncle is so good. Love all the "stuff" in the sketch. Photo made me smile. Good you were out with a group.

Fletch, hi and thanks. I do need to visit the foundry exhibit place. Aren't many foundries around.

Sketched at Gene's PT yesterday. In the Ohuhu sketchbook thinking to add watercolor. Didn't happen. Sketched with the Micron 03. The SUV on the right started to leave so I quickly finished that and then they sat for a while, I could have slowed down and got some better shapes. The one on the left is a pickup. I got lost on the wheels. Ha.
Number 6 free space - parking area.

Pine Cone, thanks for your exuberant comments on my recent pieces. I will have to go out and do a Procreate sketch and see how the change helps. I don't use Procreate much, but the straight lines were annoying. lol Looking forward to your next sketch.

Jo, thanks so much. I like your vehicle sketches. I hate when I'm sketching and they decide now is the perfect time to pull away. lol People do the same thing. I'm glad you had the opportunity to sketch. I was out in our heat and humidity yesterday morning doing a painting. I couldn't wait until I had it finished so I could come home and cool off in the pool.

Joan, thanks. It is always good to get out but good to get cool again....

I sketched on the porch in the Canson Mixed media sketchbook with Ohuhu pens and watercolor. We came in as it is pretty warm. Physical therapy for both of us today, so trying to get this done.
Number 7 snack and Number 8 egg beater

csshfl164snack.jpg

Jo - like that you captured the people getting ready to drive off, the pickup may not have been but looks like a dual rear wheel rig. Love the lead and kudos on that eggbeater. That had to be a challenge and you did it well. Great highlights on the handle.

Pine Cone - Not sure you wanted to give Joan a Bronx cheer also known as a ‘raspberry’. It is used as sarcasm or playful disrespect. My intent was playful disrespect as Joan is so damn good at techniques that are supposed to be a challenge (in her case continuous line, non-dominant hand and blind contour).

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch
