Scavenger Hunt from Life #163: Jun 19 - Jul 01

During my SIL's walk, she found a dry shell of a cicada, and she picked it up and gave it to me to sketch. That was a cute gesture of her. So here it is, might be the last batch of sketches done at this Atlanta home. We are heading to Atlanta's Hartsfield's airport soon and will fly back to Bangkok around noon. We will fly about 15 hours to Seoul... then will have 2.5 hour transit, and then another 6 hours flight to Bangkok, pretty demanding on your body but coming to see family is worth it, esp. my MIL is 88 years old now. It is great to get to talk on phone with Jo, and Joan too. I did mail out postcards to you guys. Thank you y'all for all warm welcome greeting to the US. I love to be back at the South and I had BBQ ribs and collard greens before I head back. Good bye y'all. I hope I can sketch some planes at the airport... well we will see.

#11 vacant again... with two more views of the cicada shells, and taken photo with the real thing.

Fletch, thanks for your comments. Nice neat look to your bedding...mine never looks that neat. lol I like the dark graphite in your sketch that makes it stand out. I went to a Holbein workshop/event yesterday and the rep their paints, Legion papers, and General's pencils. He mentioned a pencil that has the darkest graphite. He gave out a lot of samples, but only had a few of the pencils to give out. It was fun...and we got some freebies to take home.

Ai, I like the colorful quilt Tone's sister made. Nice work painting it. I tried quilting a few times but it takes too long to see any progress...not like painting. I like the "vacant" cicada shell. I know you are heading home this morning and I'm hoping all goes well and is on time.

Ai -- Nice job on the quilt and the "vacant" cicada. Safe travels! That's a very long trip. I laughed out loud when I saw you'd had BBQ and collard greens and then wrote "y'all"! I sometimes grow collards in my garden when I remember to plant them in the fall.

Ned, I guess Ai adapts to the south when she visits Tone's family. She did live in the south for a while. I visit my brother's family down there, but even after living there for over 40 years I don't ever remember my SIL making collard greens...but they do say "y'all." lol

Our temperatures went from a high of 100 degrees to a high of 73 today, so I wasn't in the pool. I went off in search of a location I knew had a big anchor.

Ai, thanks. Thinking of you on the long flight. Yikes!! The longest flight I was ever on was Santiago, Chile, to Los Angeles, California. About 9 hours. We usually took the route via Miami with lots of stops and time on the ground. I like the mirror. Looks like it might be old. The cicada made me smile. The noise they make is awful. Beautiful quilt. I love covering with quilts.

Robin, hi there. Looking forward to come colorful hatching.

Joan thanks. I thought about it later that I had my phone in my pocket for the list. I just had my mind made up!! I figured you would find an anchor. Thought it would be on a boat. Great find!! The fountain is watery looking. Applause.

Fletch, fabulous bedding. I always admire your shading.

Thanks everyone for your kind greeting of our US. trip. Yeah... We arrive back safely to Bangkok. Yes, I love to eat and I love the food of the South, esp, bbq and collard greens. Strangely, Tone was not craving bbq as much as me. His parents were from Indiana, and later moved down to work and settled in Birmingham, Alabama. Thus, Tone does not have southern accent. I had spent 2 years in Nashville for my master degree and 6.5 years more in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for Ph.D. So I have grown to love the foods of the south. Beside southern bbq food, I also love gumbo of New Orleans....lol. The bbq ribs and the collard greens I had was from a cool local BBQ place, called Ford BBQ of Decatur... I wish I had more time in Atlanta, I would go back there again to sketch the charming place for sure. ... They had a classic Ford truck parked at the front entrance of the restaurant.

Joan: Thanks. Lovely anchor and the fountain is super. I find it challenging to do fountain, esp. the water splashing. You did great.

Ai, I'm so glad you are back home safely. You must be exhausted! Airplane sketches from two different flights is a bonus for us. Nicely done. Jerry and I love stopping for BBQ when we travel south. He's always on the lookout for billboards advertising BBQs and we have a special road "bible" that tells you what is at each interstate highway exit, so he starts checking before we even get hungry. lol

Ai, love all the colors in the quilt. It looks homey and inviting. Cicadas are ugly and you did a pretty painting of one. Several paintings even. Nicely done. Safe, fun trip home. Again amaze with all on your plate you find time to paint even at airports. Thank you!

Joan, if he was a rep for General ‘s he probably was talking about General’s Layout Pencil. There are a couple of other pencils either great darks, like Lumograph and Blackwing. Only ever met 2 people who used Blackwing 602 pencils ($$); both were professional artists. Great shading on the anchor. Also like the feeling of motion on the fountain.

Hi Jo, Ned, Robin, and other friends lurking.

Fletch

Ai, great that you got home safely. Sounds like a good time and good food. I do like gumbo, too. Fun to here your stories.
The airplanes are super and are anchored in ways by the fuel truck and jetway. :)

Fletch, you know your pencils. thanks for info.

I sketched in my studio with pastels on a wiped off Pastelbord, 10 x 12 inches. Quickly, probably about 25 - 30 minutes. It is a bit dark but got in a sketch!

Fletch, thanks for your comments. It is always fun when you can play around with different materials...and come home with a few freebies.

Jo, super job on the watermelon...love the dark color. In my experience the darker the red flesh is the sweeter it is. I would eat that one right now. lol

Jo - Great. Job on the watermelon! Yum! Well every mentor and teacher recommends something different. I have pretty much (90%) settled in on 2mm lead holders. I like the consistent length and weight plus it can make either a nicely angled chisel point that is sturdy or a fine needle sharp point and no sharpening scraps.

Joan - Aye. Freebies are always fun.

Hope to draw today *crosses fingers
Fletch

Joan that anchor is great and good job on the direct watercolor fountain!

Wow Jo that watermelon makes me want to go out and get one right now!

Ai hope you recover from jet lag quickly! I like those airport sketches!

The house I'm staying in was my great grandmother's summer Cottage. This jug has been on the Shelf as long as I can remember. I think it's hammered copper. I had a bit of trouble with the tones and I couldn't believe how much the shadow changed while I was sketching it.

Thanks, Joan, Ai, Fletch and Ned.

Ned the little pitcher is so beautiful. You captured it well, shadow and all. I like the table as well. I remember a similar one at the last ranch where my parents worked. Comforting memories! Thanks.

Fletch, Jo, Ai, hi!

Ned, that copper jug is a treasure. I wonder how old it is...love the shape. You nailed the shape and the shading on it!

Hi everyone, so much beautiful art, I also have to see the hunts of the past weeks, in the last few weeks I have not connected because I have often traveled for lessons or exercises of the nursing course while in the last few days for exams and for some subjects I was late with the study. Yesterday I took an exam and I will try the last one in the middle of the month. In these days and especially in August I will connect more, in August I will start drawing again and then I will publish in the hunt that I missed drawing and I missed the friends of the forum and the beautiful art.
I hope everyone is well and that you are having a good summer
Ai, nice to read about your trip and see the art you created.
