Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

• All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
• Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
• You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
• All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
• Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
• Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
• Have fun!

*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Jo: Thanks for the list.

Joan: Though I had some items done for directwatercolor but I was busy clearing work and prepping trip to the US. So I did not have a chance to do all arts for directwatercolor FB group month. Oh well... I am just glad to see your regular art works and get to do a few myself.

Hello all, our flight from Bangkok to Atlanta went well...long trip but smooth. We just now enjoy chatting with our family: grandma and Tony's sister. Cheers.... We will have a few days to adjust our sleep... and then a few more days, we are heading back home as Lily is taking her days off from ongoing school year. Miss you all.

Ai, do beautiful the fruit arrangement. I bet they aren't nearly as good as the fresh ones at your home. They look great!

#2 sub. a watermelon with two apples and a peach. I have a hard time paint them apart. They came out the same...

Ai -- nice! Those "envy" apples are "hit or miss" but can sometimes be really good this time of year.

Ai, I like the softness of your edges on the fruit. Have you found anything you can't get back home?

I've been eating quite a bit of fruit lately...especially
1 - watermelon - direct watercolor

2 - quiet, foggy morning - direct watercolor

Joan: I got myself 3 peaches.... as they are the best from Georgia and this is the first time I am back to the US. in summer time. My last summer in the US. was summer of 2001. So I hope to sketch and eat more peaches. Strawberries here are bigger and more cheaper too, from the ones in Thailand. ... Nice watermelon, feel very juicy.... and the mood in the foggy morning is exquisite.

I still have no chance to do location sketching. Just stay home with family... so there will be more fruits/veggies/bowls coming lol. We did took a few short loop walks around the neighborhood lake, but with family members... so no time to sketch there, just enjoy their company.

#3 yellow ... I finally get a chance to eat this peach. The watercolor that I have was too old, so the paint is kind of spread all over and came out like the grainy effect, so I had to try to paint on them a few, to adjust.

Ai, yes hard to get the variation with grainy watercolor. Nice shapes and colors though. Definitely Georgia is famous for their peaches. Enjoy those. The one you ate on is excellent. Wow.

Joan, the watermelon looks so juicy and nice. I will get some in my next shopping trip. The foggy morning with the pretty grasses and flag and trees in distance is excellent.

Our family is gone so PT and then maybe I can sketch some.

Ai, I like the peach with the bites taken out of it. I remember driving down to Atlanta once and somewhere along the road there was a huge, huge peach raised up on some kind of scaffolding with the welcome sign. I know it is hard to find time to sketch outdoors when you are visiting and not going to be there for long.

Jo, thanks. I only buy a quarter of a watermelon at a time. They are too heavy to carry from the car and by the time we get toward the end it gets soft and doesn't taste as good. The quarter of it is just the right size.

Ai - you picked the right state first peaches. Georgia peaches are touted as the best. All the paintings are nicely done but adding the fruit stickers on the first adds a bit of flair. Sorry the granulation is troubling but they stilll look good.

Joan - you captured the foggy atmosphere so well.

#4 quiet ... my MIL's cottage. It locates way in the back of Tony's sister's home... away from the road. In addition, it is enclosed by lots of trees... So it is a super quiet. .... done with watercolor+pencil.

Ai - looking at the painting of your MIL’s cottage the word that comes to mind is cozy. Nicely done.
