Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Ai - Nice still life. Hoping lemon was for the tea and not to eat, ( yuk ). Thanks for list and for doubling up.

Joan - Am with Ai…Love the cast shadows. Also like the wires and the sun drenched look of the blacktop.

RL seems to have calmed so hoping to get back to being active. 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Ai, thanks for the list and doing two in a row! Your still life is neat. Reminds me of Matisse's still lifes for some reason. The cup has an interesting shape.

Joan such a beautiful look down the street. Lovely water and distance.

Fletch, happy your situation is calmer and you can sketch. We do get thrown for a loop once in a while.

Ai, thanks. When I was working I never had time (or the inclination) to sketch first thing in the morning before leaving. Nice still life with your lemon, berries, and tea. Nice work on the scooter!

Jo, I appreciate your comments always.

Tone got some nice peppers for me to sketch. Well, this is probably more toward painting than sketching...I spent about 1.15 hr to finish this....done with wc+ pencil.

#3 yellow -- yellow pepper
#4 old -- red skinny pepper
#5 treat -- blueberry imported from Peru
#6 container -- blue plate

Ai, fun find on the scooter. I guess you see many more of them than we do. Lovely pepper painting. Looks good on the blue plate!! We get lots of blueberries from Peru as well.

Joan, hey there. No early sketching for me anymore. I like to be up early but don't like to actually "get up."

Fletch, good job on the ink! And, done with a real ink pen. Applause.

Fletch, nice hatching on your ink bottle!

Ai, nice sketch of your peppers and berries. I always look at the assortment of peppers at the market and would love to sketch them...but then they would probably go to waste because I wouldn't eat them (especially the hot ones).

Joan -- I like the street with water in the background. That one looks like it turns, but in California there's something special about the cul-de-sacs that end at a beach or overlooking one. The nearest ones I can think of are in Pacifica south of San Francisco, but they are common further South.

Ai -- Like the fruit and tea! and I think you got the proportions on that sooter perfect! The peppers are just great, wow!!!!

Fletch -- good job on the ink with ink!

Jo -- hi!

Back in a while with a sketch....

Thanks y'all for your kind comments on my peppers. Have a great weekend you all. I hope I can sketch some more.

Ai -- I got too distracted during the last hunt! Hope to sketch more for this one.

Of course I tried to use the calligraphy ink to draw this, but my dip pen would NOT put this ink on this mixed media paper no matter what I did! It writes on other paper, but refuses to flow on this! :( It worked a little with black ink, but not very well. I went over it with a regular pen...

#1 ink .... normal ink pen + WC

Ai - great still life and I love the Scooter!
Fletch and Ned - great job on the ink sketches!
Hi Jo.
Hopefully I'll get some sketching done this Hunt.

Ahh, Ned, I find it very easy to get distracted. You did well with the pen and ink. Nice mixtures on the watercolor. All so fine!

Hi Joan, Ai and Vivien ...and anyone else who is looking.

I sketched in the large Canson mix media book this morning. The Neon colors of acrylic ink looked pretty light. Took forever to dry (I thought) so went off to PT and forgot until now to post. They might have been dry but the dark spot on the blue and front red are shiny after drying -- not wet. So guess if I put another coat they would all be shiny?? I used the Blick gray markers for the gray and black and a Micron 03 for the drawing.

Number 2 old - my hand, Pentel RSVP Ballpoint
