Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Ai -- that's great! Yeah, the tourists come and go but the old fort stays... like how the palm tree disappeared to let us see the fort!

It sure seems like every hunt goes by faster...

Ned: Thanks for your kind comments.

Joan: Thanks. Wonderful garden scene...the gazebo was so well done. It's depth and perspective are brilliant.

#2 green... direct watercolor...I happened to went to work early and stopped at a park next to our Univ. to sketch this before my work day.

Before I left the park, I intercepted park crew cutting hollyhock away to replant something else...So I asked them for a few stems. I sketched them down quickly in direct watercolor...

#3 nature...direct watercolor...about 20 minutes...not include the drying time of thr last batch of dabs.

Joan -- love the gazebo and golden glowing light behind it.

Ai -- those direct watercolors are great... I like hollyhocks, need to plant some more this year! ;) The bright colors with that background are just great!

Off to visit my parents tomorrow before my daughter goes back to college... might check in tomorrow evening...

Ned thanks for the list….good amt of items present and available…now comes the big task to squeeze in a sketch or two
Just a note ..i love being here with everyone but really can’t comment alot and do this. Please forgive.

I love the way you all fFILL THOSE PAGES!

Boy, you all just leapt out of the blocks on this Hunt!

Ai - Like the Tourists enjoying view of the old fort.am with Ned. Like your artistic license to remove palms to improve the view. The park and hollyhock paintings are birth so pretty. Beginning to think florals make great subjects.

Joan - The garden gazebo looks so inviting.

Robin - Am with Ai. You have a fun filled freezer. And no need to apologize. We want to see your fun almost always homey pen sketches REMINDER: If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Keep learning
Fletch

Hi there, Ai. I like your humans. You find the best cafes. I like your capture of green with all the plants. And your nature blooms are beautiful. Nice technique. I love hollyhocks, too. Didn't know you could grow them in the hot climate. I haven't seen any here, only in the mountains in New Mexico.

Joan, your nature with the gazebo is super.

Robin, always great to see you. Fun peek into your freezer. I see ice trays and maybe ice cream . Yummy.

Hi Ned and Fletch.

I played in the dust in my studio at the easel. Wiped off the Xmas cactus, I know but I have good photos. The same paper, various pastels. Number 1 lemon or fruit - the colander (not really lopsided) with Texas pink grapefruit (so good), lemon, lime, grapes, red pear and little apple. We rarely have so much fruit at one time. Ha. The bananas were too ripe and ugly.

All: Thanks for your kind comments.

Jo: Wonderful fruit still-life. I love how you did the reflection on the metal container. Plus your purple background did a great job of feeling of light flowing through from light. Awesome result.

Thanks, Ai. I worked on the shapes and handles tonight for a while but still not happy with the overall shape. I like the colors and idea! Maybe tomorrow!

Ai, thanks. I'm always wandering around looking for a spot that I haven't sketched yet here. This was a bit of a hidden view. You're so lucky to be around areas that are in bloom most of the time. I get so tired of our brown, drab winter colors. You capture the color so well. I love the hollyhocks. I'm glad the park crew let you have some of the blossoms. Nice!!

Ned, thanks. Have a good time visiting your parents. How far are they from you?

Robin, even your freezer looks like fun. Your sketches have such charm to them.

Jo, thanks. I don't ever have enough fruit to fill a colander. I used to eat a lot of it, but lately that hasn't been happening. Love the reflection on the colander itself. Nicely done!

I'm so behind commenting 🫣 but I like everyone's work here and Joan's wonderful previous thread. 💞 💞

Ai, the sale of your painting to the tourists is wonderful 😊 👍 I'm so happy for you! Lovely picture of you & the painting & the tourists! Well done!

#1 Pine cone, Acorn, or Nut - ananas as it's structure looks a little bit like pine cone. I finally managed to paint ananas 🍍 so I post it.

Grapes: Thank you very much for your kind words. Absolutely pretty result of the pineapple and fruit medley.
