Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Ned — Thanks for a cool list 😌 Fun, outdoorsy (Venice-esque!!!) ☀️

Ai — Beautiful tree sketches 🍃 and excellent sketches of your students. They look so focused 🖊️

JOE/FLETCH !!! — So grateful for you being okay 😅 and thanks for letting us know ☀️ Hope your leg is doing better 🙏 Best to both of you 💪💪

Joan — Wow, fantastic views of Venice 😃 So wonderful to see what you see, there on the other side of the world (as with Ai) 😍 You bring that world to life with all its amazing colors and textures 😂 Thank you for taking the time to share ☀️

Brian, excellent 👍!
Joan, nice street views from Venice! Brings back memories. Gondolas 🖤!! Will you take a ride?
Ai, quite good sketch of the students! I'm glad you have such wonderful models 😊. I'm missing my life models, and husband won't pose.
Enjoyable looking trees! 🌴
Pine Cone, Fletch, Robin and Ned, 👋 "Hello"! ~ Grapes (earlier mosc.)

I have an idea what to sketch .. smth to do with boats. I just have to wait for winds to calm down 🍃 we're have the rests (tail they call it) of the hurricanes' winds and rains here in Scandinavia 🌬️.

Brian, Grapes, PineCone, Joan, and all: Thank you.

Grapes: Hope you can joy us with some items.

Brian: Love your dark contrast... beautiful bug sketches... esp. the challenging texture of its legs...

Joan: The sketches from Venice are superb. I love all the intricate fence, door, and window details you get... and the wonderful sparkle on the water as a background of the exotic gondolia...

Pine Cone, many thanks fir your kind words!

Brian, wonderful sketches of the beetle. I don’t know if I would be examining it that closely. Lol

Grapes, thanks. We did the obligatory gondola ride the first time we visited Venice. Now I just appreciate other people riding in them.

Ai, thanks for appreciating the details.

Ai -- The different colors in the palm fronds looks great. Really like that one. The perspective on the students makes it interesting!

Fletch -- Really glad to hear you are well. Hope the power comes on soon! Hope your leg feels better.

Joan -- I love all your Venesia watercolors. They all have excellent sense of light.

Brian -- I like beetles! Those are good. You always seem to get really good contrast in your drawings.

Grapes -- hi! not just muscat anymore! :)

Robin and Pine Cone -- hi!

#1 boat. This is the Point Reyes Boat, which is famous among photographers. I'm not sure how famous it is otherwise. It's been decaying for decades, but last Winter's storms really broke it apart. I went fishing at Pt. Reyes today and stopped on the way to sketch it.... I have a feeling it probably won't be there much longer.

Ned: Thanks... awesome decaying boat.

Joan: Thanks. ... Gorgeous Venice buildings and outdoor cafe scene

Joan, nice cafe setup with people. Interesting observation of all the menu and coffee signs. 👍
Trattoria is exclusive, all tiles, beautiful red facciata and area signs "Sestiere de Dorsoduro" .. ah, so Veneto! Thank you for posting these even though you have lots of other things to do in Venice and are busy, I'm sure.
People do funny things in gondolas, I made a video of man singing a sonata in gondola when passing by !
Ned, nice drawing of the boat. Yes, I have converted to Grapes 😄.

Ned, grazie mille! Nice sketch of the boat. Looks like it won’t last much longer. Glad you got to sketch it.

Ai, thanks. You know how much there is to sketch here.

Grapes, thank you. I have a video of someone singing and playing the accordion on a gondola.

10 - in public - watercolor and ink

Joan, #10 sketch is lovely with harmonic colors. I like the composition and the two birds. Amazing work done on the buildings, rooftops and all the detail.
Have you noticed if Venice has changed much since your last visit there?
