Sargent study

I recently came across the watercolours by John Singer Sargent. He seems to paint mostly directly, rather loose at times but with tremendous control and sense of light. I decided to try to learn how to do better shadows and to dip my toes in the world of dry brush.
Here are my attempts.

These are wonderful and Sargent is a great master to study watercolor with!

I took a semester watercolor class at a community college in 2012- and we painted that same cottage, your first one! I'll have to see if I still have it somewhere! Nice memories for me, thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much. I love how he handled the cast shadows from the trees. Some parts more distinct and others more fleeting. Please share your cottage if you can find it :)

A lovely set of paintings! Love the shadows across the buildings. I like the looseness of the two portraits. 🙂

Lovely work! I'm a fan of copying the masters, especially when you just want to focus on technique. Very relaxing approach.

You did a great job with these!

Nice work 😊, I can see you have a good understanding of lighting. Sargent was a master of this and especially tone. Well done 😁

I really like all of these. The shadows on the first one are especially well done. I am so heavy handed and could learn about handling light from these.
