Collecting art has always been a means of bragging among the wealthy.

Art isn't conceit, it's appreciation

Some teacher once told me that all Egyptian statues were painted and that even on the sphinx they found particles of paint washed away through years of sand blasting. I presume the only difference was that the items underground were not subjected to the same conditions and more colour survived.

How well informed the teacher was I have no idea. I believed him though
