Sly Stone (Sylvester Stewart, 1943-2025) along with Brian Wilson, is one of two giants of pop music from the 1960s that we have lost over the past 2 days. Sly and the Family Stone were a mixed-gender and racially integrated group that blended multiple musical genre including Funk, Rock, Soul, Psychedelia, Avant-Garde, etc… He is also credited with being one of the major figures bringing social-political commentary into Pop Music. One obituary for Sly that I read suggested that he was Prince before Prince existed… and indeed, the “Purple One” admitted to Sly Stone as being a major influence.

RIP Sly Stone

His music was historical and amazing. Thank goodness he and the band influenced Prince.

Brian Wilson never meant much to me but SLY did! This was the only one of their albums that I owned:

This was way back in the olde high school days of yore while I was at my most moody and angsty teenage self. And despite the fact that this album was happy and poppy and funky, I listened (and probably danced) to it constantly. I lost touch with the group, and him, after this one but still…he was a big part of my little girl world there for awhile.

Bye Sly. 😘
