Ribcage (feedback wanted)

I’m willing to learn the anatomy of the ribcage, but I find it to be difficult to draw.

I made two rough sketches for practice. I made a lot of mistakes on the anatomy of the ribcage. I think my biggest struggle is drawing the ribs. I find them to be very confusing to draw.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. And apologies for the image quality.

I think you are drawing what you think it should look like. the image on the left is too round, the one on the right too triangular. A possible way to interiorize it is to simply trace over an anatomical image. Search for a good image, print it on paper and trace over it.

Ribs in your sketches look to me as too horizontal. Usually they go downwards from the spine, and then the cartilages join upwards to the sternum. The one on the left, btw looks too much T-shaped, the one on the right looks better above but too thin on the lower half. It should look more or less like a tie.

That said, overall, both sketches look rather good.

I think in the beginning we can be very conscious of copying and tracing. I would suggest tracing it a few times to get a feel for it. You’re trying to understand the rib cage, not produce a work of art.
