Hi all,
I've returned to art after about 25-30 years, as I'm nearing 50. I used to like drawing faces, landscapes, buildings and also cartoons like Garfield and I remember liking oil pastels at school. I've always appreciated a good pen or fine liner and I also like drawing fonts.
I've got into art journalling recently which has helped me get started just being creative again for its own sake, some drawing, some colouring in, some fonts and quotes. I've been on YouTube watching various artists and learning bits and trying not to put any "shoulds" on myself. I'm drawn to lots of different areas .. I like sketchbook style drawings with a fine liner and am doing some of those. I'd like to add watercolour at some stage. I'm also drawn to some of the realistic drawings on YouTube. I also like the idea of trying painting with canvas at some stage. I have seen advice in a few places to try drawing the same thing daily so I'm also doing that (cats). I've also been reading "drawing on the right side of the brain".
My question is how people here have found themselves through these beginning stages, particularly in terms of what supplies to buy. I'm reminding myself it's ok to like lots of mediums but don't want to go off down why rabbit holes and waste money too much. It's the big birthday in December so I'm holding off buying too much till then to give me a chance to play and see what I am drawn to.
Thanks in advance
