New! Landscape/Cityscape challenge!

What a lovely rendition Rikard! I keep thinking of who you’re reminding me of, and I don’t know if I found them yet but right now you’re reminding me of this post impressionist painter:

Thank you so much Christine. Louis Bellon, what a find :) I've never heard of him. But now I have looked at some of his work. Quite something to aspire to. And I think I know what you mean. He also seems to paint rather direct with not much layering or glazing. Mostly with mid tones as well. Color is central, not so much the values.

I did another watercolour of Tullan Strand, Bundoran.
Water and especially busy water, is one of the things I struggle with a lot.

This time I wanted to use a looser and more spontaneous approach to the sea.

I do think this is a slightly more interesting painting than the previous. But maybe it's too busy? I feel that the sea and sky need to be busy. But maybe the foreground should be calmed down a bit. Lose some of those hard edges? What do you guys think?

Grapes and Rikard, lovely paintings from both of you. It's fun to see how differently artists can paint from the same reference.

Rikard, I find that my eye does go to the foreground. I think it is less a matter of it being busy and more a matter of the high value contrast is there. The next place my eye goes is to the mountain in the background which also has the high value contrast. It all depends on what you want.

Rikard, this is an even stronger painting in my eyes. There’s magic happening in this painting. I feel the mood of the place. I feel the sky and the land are in conversation in a way, with how you’ve done it. And those clouds are beautiful. They are not simply there, but they have their own character. Their own personalities. So uniquely done. There’s a dynamic fluidity to your painting. I like how you let the darks be prominent and the undulating clouds speak to the foreground. The foreground is not washed out. It’s responding to the sky in my mind. You have put life into the scene instead of just rendering it. Very cool style. I agree with Ann. It is very cool to see two beautiful styles depicting a similar landscape from different artists. I would not touch a thing in this painting!🙂

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I also think this one is better. And I had more fun painting it as well :)
I believe I have found a way for me to improve. I usually paint very quickly. 30-45 min per painting. I do one and then I move onto something else for my next painting. But then it's hard to actually feel I make progress. Since I have nothing to compare with. But doing 4-5 of these quick paintings of the same subject, really enables me to see mistakes and new ways to do things. This is a way forward I feel.

Oh, that’s beautiful Grapes! Well done. Looks gorgeous with the colour in. Love how you handled the sky, the rain and the partial shadow on the land. 🙂🙂👏🏻

Rikard, your second painting feels more complex to me and it does have a greater sense of depth. The way the heavy sky hangs overhead is so beautiful. It reminds me to think of clouds as moving, flowing objects that create a lot of mood.

Grapes, you finished this painting in a gorgeous way! You brought out the best of the drama in the sky and on the water. I like how you kept the land areas quiet so there’s a peaceful place for our eyes to rest.

Anne, thanks!
Donna, moving can be and often is a chaos. l still remember after 20 yrs our move. When you get your paints out of boxes you will have new energy to start again after a short break.
Wayne, thank you. Much appreciated.
Terri, 👋 so true!

I'm seeing an odd thing happening on the left hand side in the horizon. The blue mountain line seems to go lower than the rest. I just checked, it's not happening only in the photo but also in the painting. I might fix it today.

My next oil painting practice is "Bundoran" from the first ref. I cropped little bit out to give myself less work. To paint entire ref including the front area could be next interesting effort. In this piece I wanted to practice sky's relation to the mountain and water. This painting measures: 35x14 cm.

Oh I do like it Grapes! It sort of looks like a watercolor to me with the subtle color transitions in the sky and mountains
