Yes, this particular subject really lends itself to a long format. Part of it is the generally picturesque setting of Tomales Bay, a very long peninsula that situates Point Reyes National Park. And the site of the shipwreck is exposed to the panoramic views in all directions.
So as you can see from the dual examples, both are long form, just a bit different in the ratio.
By eliminating all extraneous background detail and leaving only enough to draw the eye in the watercolor, the composition is spare but effective, at least that was my intent.
