I tried that a few times but to me you must work big and I work small as well as you need a store of materials.

Yeh that's what I wondered. It also seems more suited to certain methods but I might give it a try just with pen in a notebook...

This is more or less how I work. Building layers. I agree with Enyaw about working large, I really prefer it - it allows more freedom but its not always doable. I think the smallest I've worked on this way is about 50x50cm.
If you always work on a smaller scale anyway you may find it pretty easy to do. I just feel clumsy and restricted ( well I am pretty clumsy any way)
