Pencils H, HB and 2B on canson paper.
This is my second ever Bargue done with pencils. I almost broke the paper on the cheek area.

That's incredible Grapes 👏👏👏 really well done.

Just looked up Bargue. I'm interested in trying that too.

Jade, thanks!
When you start one, you can ask me if you have any questions or want critique. Although I'm not a good adviser/teacher 😅 but I have some knowledge of them.

At first I thought l wouldn't like drawing them because I had only been painting with oils and l found drawing boring but for my surprise I enjoyed tremendously drawing bargues. Now that you mentioned it, I should do another one. I always wanted and I have plenty of plates to choose.

I recommend Canson paper for it. I've been drawing the Animal& Wildlife Challenge animals to a sketch paper and find myself pretty fast in trouble.

Thanks Grapes, I appreciate that and the tips. Have you heard of Sylvie Mahdal on YT. not bargue, but her shading and drawings are incredible.

I didn't know Sylvie's videos or work before. I didn't yet open the videos but I'm sure there's lots of information. 👍 Looks really good work!

This is phenomenal. Until I saw your description, I thought it was a photo of a sculpture. Your patience is only matched by your talent.

All that ever wish to know, when I see something like this is.........How the devil do you BEGIN IT?? All the shading, the nuances, forms, and details I believe I could accomplish, but how do you BEGIN a piece such as this?? An outline, a rough sketch, .....something that eventually gets erased?? I'd just like to understand your first 10 minutes of pencil work.

@WFMartin It all starts with a line, I'm talking about the border line of the head. Line is thinner where the light hits and thicker in the shadows. Of course, after measuring. If you do a rough sketch it needs to be in another paper, maybe sketch paper bc otherwise this Canson won't last till the end even though it's a good paper. Lines you draw are ALL straight lines, there are no curve lines! You get the curve by articulating each line when you go on. I'll see later today if I have any photos of the first steps.
