X-posted to Scavenger Hunt a couple of months ago. I painted this pleinair about two months ago when there was a little bit of ice floating on the sea. I wanted to paint ice not water but it had melted a day or two earlier. Well, basically wanted to practice painting boats/ships.

You did wonderful work with those ships, Grapes! I admire the painting as much as your ability to set up and paint in public. Did you do an underpainting or just jump in with the paint because your subjects could have sailed away?

Donna, thanks.
No underpainting only rough drawing with brush and thin paint. It was quite cold so no time for other than a quick alla prima. I only used turpentine because linceed oil would have frozen.
No, these things won't go anywhere, they are well parked until next ice sometime Nov./Dec. -25. I plan to go paint them again in summer just to see how different nature is then.

This pleinair was a good test on how l paint with people nearby: I thought I'd be all alone but to contrary there was a continuous queue of passengers passing by pulling their suitcases behind as they were going to the ferries and cruising ships near these icebreakers, a thing I didn't know. Well, this session went well with audience and I enjoyed being there.

I know .. the cold I can get do cold out there but that particular day I was warm. Linceed oil I can not use much in cold because it just freezes, unless mix with lots of turpentine.
