Gray Whale Cove (xpost plein air)

Today's pastel from Gray Whale Cove in Montara, CA, is one of my best in recent sessions. 11.5x9.5" soft pastel on Sienna PastelMat. B. Charlow 2024. (The photo doesn't do the real colors justice.)

I like this one, Bart. The trees frame the center of interest nicely.

Thanks, Sno. David Dunlop says that this framing device, which is classic, is called a "coulisse". It derives from the curtains or stage pieces on the sides that define the focal space in the middle.

Had to take a second look. Glad I did.
Strong painting.
It, simply put, is a fairy tale with life; and with life is feeling. I had not seen the girl on first view.

Yeah, OK, but honestly there was no intention of a hidden girl in the picture!

I know that .. it's what our paintings reveal, nothing more. I for one am not good enough to paint with intent but accidents happen.

Here we have our little girl all tucked in and the two trees become the guardians of her soul while she rests by peaceful waters.
