Remember when it’s small, you can simply imply things like shape. And other things. Don’t get too caught up in fussing with tiny details that is so hard to fit. You can end up losing likeness and overwork. Sometimes people have more likeneds at the beginning with just implying and not tightening down. if they keep going, they can lose it. some artists have made their style where it’s been an economy of strokes and details. But they capture it.
Painting from life is the absolute best education for learning values. Many artists would benefit from that. Photos can distort what’s really there.
Yes, working with grey scale of a black-and-white photo can really help you compare. It’s one of the hardest things to adjust to moving to colour. Do a black-and-white of your photo. But then do a black-and-white of a picture of your painting where it’s at. You will see where the discrepancies are. Especially dark spots.
