Desert Light Effect

Initially I was going to try this with oils alone but when I struggled with layering in went the cold wax. The camera is exaggerating the textures because it's not noticeable from a normal viewing distance. This was a little too complicated for me but I had to try it because the sun's rays were so intense and golden at that time of day. I liked how the big storm cloud was moving in but it couldn't block the light show. Oil and cold wax on paper, 7x9 in.

Stunning! I love the way you’ve captured the light, especially in the foreground. The colours really sing together.

Thanks so much Sanlynn and laf. It’s fun learning about oils and how useful a palette knife is for scraping off and starting over, haha.

Topnotch. Again the texture...... And so much on a small painting. Makes one wonder, why go larger?

You captured a beautiful atmosphere, Donna! Love seeing your progress with oils.

Hi Donna. Wonderful, just proves that as a mentor you have the talent to back it up. The light is beautiful

Thanks John. I probably like texture too much but maybe it’s a phase. I would probably not do well painting larger because I would be forced to put out large piles of paint and what if some of it was wasted. Ha!

Thank you Wayne. I tried a different blue - cerulean instead of ultramarine- and added in some chromatic black. I like how the dark blues worked with the golds.

Bethany, thanks so much. Any progress is good.

Murray, every time I scraped off a section and did it over I congratulated myself for not getting too frustrated. I’m trying not to expect too much too fast. Thank you.

Thanks Bart. Clouds are good for seeing subtle color changes.

Thanks Kay. It was the light that really attracted me. I love how dramatic it can be at the end of the day.

You're improving with every painting. Lucky us! This is another gem, full of light and color. ❤️ I see how challenging the light was in this one, but you have captured that feeling of storm clouds billowing around while the sun just continues to pop the ground colors. It's wonderful how you are able to capture this. Terrific work!

Thanks Grapes, oils seem harder to learn than pastels but I’m having fun.

Thank you Terri, any little improvement is good! We have “mud rain” with storms here. There are noticeable earth colors in the air whenever it’s windy.

Thanks Dave, those dark clouds blow in quickly.
