This is a quick, gestural, ink and watercolour wash sketch, in an 130 gsm, A6 size (approximately 14 cms x 10 cms) sketchbook.

This form of transportation appears to be of Japanese origin. In Japanese “jin ricky shaw” means human pulled vehicle. Chennai had hand-pulled rickshaws from around 1930’s to 1973. Cycle-rickshaws came on the scene in the 1950s and lasted until almost the end of the last century. They have now been replaced almost totally by auto-rickshaws, which are gas, diesel, and electric powered, sturdier versions of the cycle-rickshaw

Another excellent rendering, especially the composition. Thanks ever so much for the info. I was in Asia (South Korea and Japan among other places) in 1983 and saw a few different types.
