I have finished the design of my proposed concrete bird feeder and I am ready to start the physical work. Over the coming weeks (more likely months! ) I will be reporting on the work flow and progress. This first part is just an introduction to show the preliminary work I've done to prepare the way. Concrete is an unforgiving medium, so it requires meticulous planning and preparation to prevent any nasty surprises. Luckily, it is in my nature to look before I leap. Also, working out the engineering details down to 1mm tolerances (quite good enough for my concrete work) is also something I enjoy tremendously.
As mentioned before in Creative Spark, I have started with the tray that will hold the plates of bird food.

I have also made a mobile work surface, size 1200 x 600 mm, from spare parts left over from other projects. Here is a photo of the work surface, with the tray on it. The tray is essentially ready; I just have to clean it up.
I am reasonably happy with the tray, but I may try to make a better one later after I’ve made to concrete parts. It will be removable, so it will be easy to upgrade later. In the next instalments of this narrative I will talk about the design steps and show what I want the sculpture to look like.
