New! Change/New Beginnings Challenge

Thank you, Donna!
Enyaw. Oh yes, it took a lot of finessing to get what I wanted. It’s not a professional enough program where I can just dive in and point and do something myself. Eventually got something I liked from my suggestions and it trying to understand me.
I actually have it to go through old photographs and improve orange, badly lit photos from the 70s and 80s. Blurry ones from the 90s. When it gets its right, it’s amazing. But only one in 10 photos turns out well. It does amazing things. But many times people just don’t look like themselves. And AI you have to be careful. You can tell it not to do something and it does it anyways. It gives a lot of wrong answers too. It often says it has done something and it’s done the opposite or it hasn’t done anything at all. Including create an image, it said it created! I am glad I’m a generation where I don’t automatically reust technology to get it right. I have a general idea when answers are wonky. They have programmed it to be very positive, so it’s absolutely sure of itself and it keeps trying to tell you something’s right when it’s completely wrong. 🙂

Christine,
For sure it is also full of flattery and butter them up language so you almost think you\re talking to your favorite old uncle. I don't know how bad your abilities are but abstract without a purpose doesn't need a lot in the terms or lines or drawing. I am going to do my next with that in mind. I don't need to rely on drawing but on creative use of value and color. Value first.

Yes, I find the flattery weird on AI.
Abstract without a purpose. Well you see in good abstract there is a purpose. It may be very different than what most artists are going for. It could be just for the love of the medium of paint and color. For example, the thickness of paint, the joy of just painting for it’s own visual qualities. It’s meeting some criteria for the artist that makes it work. It may not have to look like a certain subject the artist is trying to portray. Certainly you can get lucky and just throw paint on a canvas and if it’s interesting, you let it dry and that’s what it is. But often you will make mud. Often you’ll look at it, even if it isn’t mud and say no, it’s not quite right. It isn’t working yet. This is how you figure out what’s missing.
The principles and elements of design are in full effect when it comes to abstract just like anything else. I have contemplated very much over my abstracts that I’ve done by hand, for weeks. I’ve tried different things to see what makes the painting stronger. I’ve contemplated over digital art, although it hasn’t taken as long. It isn’t a thoughtless art. Although at first, it might feel that way coming from the traditional art subjects artist portray. However, even with traditional art subjects the best work elevates it somehow. There’s a painterly way of portraying, or skill set that takes it to beyond what most people do. They are very competent pieces of artwork that just still lacks something to move it to the next level. You know that artwork when you see it. How they played with the lighting and the line and the contrast, the composition. Etc. or a very creative way to portray a subject. Some of the very best work I have seen almost blurs the elements, and just becomes ‘it’. It totally embodies what it’s trying to portray in one image so thoroughly. It is a very difficult bar to reach. And that is usually the difference between a wonderful tactician and a very genius artist. But a thorough consideration and use of elements and principles is the foundation to push your work forward.
Successful or “good” abstract art does require thought. I’ve seen some simple abstract art in museums and knew that it was pushing the idea of art at the time it was made because it sure didn’t have a lot to look at.
The best thing to do is always keep in mind as you play around or if you plan your abstract piece, the principles and elements of design. I learned to do them with traditional subjects and style of painting. It is now become almost automatic to me. I use it even more in abstract work. It challenges me.
As far as line and drawing goes, you can absolutely do that in abstract. There’s many pieces of abstract art that explore line and drawing. They are very interesting to look at.
Here are your principles and elements of design. I will also leave a link to the website that I took this picture from. You can read a lot more on it on that website. But you can read up about this on many different websites, with many different examples. I
would also encourage everyone to go looking for abstract work. There’s all kinds of people and all kinds of levels just throwing stuff together. I would suggest looking up museums and an art history books or websites. Well known and highly regarded paintings from each of the genre around the world. You want to see the best examples to get an idea. These artists were pushing the idea of what art is at the time. There are so many different styles in the abstract genre. Just as are many in the contemporary art genre.
This is from the Tyler Museum of Art Education blog. I’m sure you and many others are familiar with it. It counts in art.

.. we are different on that one. I design and compose as I paint, letting the paint dictate my next move. I do agree with the thought as I am much more involved painting an abstract. I am not focused on how I should handle my medium as I am in contemplating my next move. Each move involves its own thought process.

.. I like the color as a factor for forcing the eye where I want it to rest and then lead the viewer off on another exploration. I feel I rely more on value and shape. What leads what follows. What awakens my imagination.

Have not seen a good gallery presentation but go the iPad route. I find a lot leave a lot to be desired but now and then one stands out and captures my spirit.

I will do a series to see where I am today. Wondering if I should post them in abstract or here as they really are a new awakening.

Since they meet this particular Challenge, why not post them here? I have no doubt they will be inspiring!
