This is an A5 size ink and wash loose sketch based on a photograph by Bridwajit.
The title of this post translates to the temple of Rama who guarded (protected) the lake. This is a Pallava era temple and is around 1600 years old.
In the late 18th century, because of sustained torrential rains, the British Collector Lionel Blaze feared that the huge Madurathakam Lake would be breached. During the night, while inspecting the lake bund, Collector Blaze saw two warriors with bows and arrows guarding it. Despite further heavy rains, the bund survived.
The Collector believed that he had seen Rama and Lakshmana guarding the bund, leading to the temple's name and the addition of a shrine by Collector Blaze in gratitude.
