I wanted to see what I could do with chromatic black, yellow ochre and white so I used an old charcoal sketch for a reference. There's a little bit of red-orange showing through from the underpainting so that provides a little bit of extra color. I like how the black becomes blue when mixed with white and how it creates greenish grays when mixed with yellow. I also tried the kind of underpainting where you put on a medium tone and then wipe back to get the lights. It was a great way to establish the values before adding color. 6x6 oil on paper

Absolute gem. Love the desaturated look. Now I have to go see how I will experiment on your experiment.
With your recent paintings I am assuming your hands are getting better. Hope so anyway.

Wayne, I’m glad you see something good in this. Thanks. I didn’t think I’d get exciting greens but maybe with a different yellow. I was actually happier with the monochromatic underpainting but I needed to test the black. My left hand is slowly getting stronger … and I’m on the waiting list for the same surgery on the right hand. Hopefully one surgery will do this time instead of four. Arthritis is the pits.

Thanks Jade. It was fun putting color to the pears without any real models.
