This is my first time hosting such a thread. Please let me know if you would like me to change/add any images. I have tried to find a varied selection of pictures. But most of my colour photography were landscapes.

Added a few more here. And please feel free to crop, simplify or just take parts and incorporate into something completely different. I know I will :)

Thank you so much. I used to do quite a bit of travelling and photography. It's nice to find some use for the pictures :)

Rikard, you're fast! I admire that you can be so loose and interpretive. I just try to copy and get very frustrated that I do not have more imagination.

Rikard, absolutely beautiful photos to work from. Thank you so much. So many wonderful options. You are around so much beauty. I can see that you’re going to inspire a lot of people to paint something!
Thanks for hosting.🙂🙂🙂

Rikard, thanks for hosting. Great reference photos. Hope to participate this month.

I spent three plus hours on the bird (Blue Vanga), only to bin the effort, which I hate to do. Usually if I "stick it out" I can get a passable result, but this was beyond saving. I really wanted to participate this month, and still may try to take part of a photo or something. Everything seems so complex and difficult to portray; I take the refs so literally, have no imagination, and find it impossible to simplify my subject.

Well, here is my "participation trophy" effort. I did a crop of the cyclist because I wanted to finish something in just an afternoon in a subject I wouldn't normally paint. I It was a larger image, but the rest of it came out poorly and had poor composition so I cropped it in a bit more. Thanks for hosting and supplying the photos. This is a watercolor on Arches 140 CP, about 7 x 7.

Rikard, lovely photos and a lovely start for the month with your Spain Sunset.

Joy, sorry to hear you had so much trouble with the bird painting. Glad you gave another try with the cyclist. I especially like how you captured the bright sunlight on his back.

Here's mine of the Blue Vanga. About 5"x7", line and Inktense wash in XL Mixed Media sketchbook.

Very nice, Anne, especially the beak and. feet. You are really doing a lot of quality work with the Inktense.

Joy, you’ve captured the light so well. I love the feeling of motion you’ve created.
Anne, your style has come through on this lovely painting.

Anne, how many layers do you use? I see so many artists paint multiple layers, but I over work so much doing it that way. My very first workshop was with Tony Couch. He painted alla prima and stressed just paint it as dark as you need the first go. Uh, easier said than done! :)

Probably 2 or 3 layers most of the time. Occasionally and extra one for a dark color. It's all intuitive based on what I see after it dries. On a light area like a sky, I might go with just one layer, usually wet in wet if it's a large area.

Thanks, Anne. I have a tendency to stir up the layers underneath. Using one stroke and a lighter touch would be better, so I have to practice that more.
