Could you affix something to the back of the canvas, and then fill it in the front with some kind of acrylic paste medium? Like a molding paste, fiber paste or something similar? I've only used them once or twice. You don't need a waterbrush specifically. Any brush will do. I just drew with them, and wet the drawing afterward to make it into paint and blend my colors. They dissolve really well.
