I hear ya about discussion vs. drama when it comes to politics. I have been doing a ton of unfollowing, unfriending, and blocking on FB lately. Outside of that, I do usually have good interactions with people on FB. I've met a bunch of them in real life, too, which I love. People bitch a lot...

What brand of watercolor paints do you like?

I used to use pans too, years ago, and I've used WN since the 70s. I always liked their clear, transparent colors. But I also got to love tube paints and further, DS Primatek. I love the granulation with those and how often the granulation settles with a different color in the depressions in the...

What brand of watercolor paints do you like?

For most of my life, I painted with WN pan watercolors. I bought individual pans and put together two large pan sets of cool and warm. Then DS came out with their Primatek, and I started using their tubes, and maybe five years ago, I came across Guerra Paint's liquid pigment dispersions. I used...

What brand of watercolour paper do you like?

I have been using Strathmore Gemini 500 CP 300#. I got it from Jerry's at 10 full sheets for $115 plus $3 shipping with a promo code for the shipping. This stuff is so tough. You can scrub and scrub without harming it. Also, it doesn't have the character at 300# of being like blotter, which some...

    Tree Painting

Then the first painting is balanced by mountains, no? It's not only a tree in the center. Inness was real particular about his composition and even had some weird theories about using certain numbers of elements, being very conscious of their repetition and their spacing, especially for trees...

    Tree Painting

Once you see the four quarters he likes to use a lot, it's hard not to see it.

    Tree Painting

He's kind of known for it. I read a lot about him because he is my favorite landscape painter. He often divides his paintings into four quadrants, but it is surprising how often he puts a tree smack dab in the middle. Here are some examples:

    Tree Painting

I think determining solidly where the light is coming from would help a lot. You could add shadows and blue colors on the away side. I would also exploit aerial perspective more. I don't think there's anything wrong with putting the tree dead center; George Inness did it all the time.

    How did you learn art?

We had art in grade school--mostly painting with poster paints or watercolors (Prang!) and coloring with colored pencils (color walks). I drew all the time at home and wanted to be an artist when I grew up. We went to art museums on trips and I remember being so awed by some Rothko...

    Social Media

Almost all the art I've sold has been through my FB personal page, where I have 1750+ "friends" due to running a shop for 20 years. I post every finished painting on that page and give a link to my art site on shopify. I do post some political stuff on there, but mostly I post anecdotes about my...

    FYI - WetCanvas

I've noticed that a lot of old posts are missing from WetCanvas. Frankly, the old posts were for me one of the best things about it, because there was a lot of experience with various methods, materials, and tools there. Most of that seems to be gone now. In the past I frequented one of the...

    Vivianite?

Has anyone tried vivianite as a watercolor pigment? A friend posted about using it in acrylics and I did some research on it because it's an earth blue, sometimes known as blue ochre. Daniel Smith used to carry it in their watercolors, but now they don't. Apparently it changes color, becoming...

    Storage Issues

I had a chance to buy the house I was living in in upstate NY on a land contract. According to my calculations, I could have it paid off in 7 years if I paid what I was paying in rent plus a percentage for maintenance. It was a 2 bedroom Cape Cod with a patio and a full basement. Lots was 1/5...

    Photographing art

I use a DSLR (or for smaller stuff, a good scanner) for photographing my work in sections and then piece it together with Photoshop Elements, but I was having a dickens of a time with lighting (glare, not enough light, uneven lighting) until I got two cheap soft boxes from B&H Photo. The stands...
