    Happy 4th!

Alas I don't drink, but enjoy yours! O wait -- you mean the 5th as in date? I'll certainly celebrate that, it's my first grand-dog's 10th birthday today. Here he is enjoying a bit of rest and relaxation today, and I can totally sympathize with his desire for a bit of peace in the shade, since...

    What's the temperature there?

Upper 60s during the day, upper 50s at night. We are supposed to get to 75 next Friday, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

    What are you working on?

I feel your pain, David. Anytime it gets over the high 70s here I spend most of the day just sitting in the shade drinking iced coffee...

    patterns

By patterns do you mean drawings done to the scale of the finished work? If so, I do that a lot - usually on semi-transparent parchment or drafting paper, and usually in Conté. I mostly do it for individual figures and then transfer the results.

    What are you working on?

In the Storm of Roses, Acrylic on panel, 12"x36" This was inspired by Ingebord Bachmann's poem, Im Gewitter der Rosen (In the Storm of Roses): Wohin wir uns wenden im Gewitter der Rosen, ist die Nacht von Dornen erhellt, und der Donner des Laubs, das so leise war in den Büschen, folgt uns...

What are some of the best art schools you know of?

I just wanted to add that NSCAD was founded in part by Anna Leonowens of The King and I fame. A quite fascinating person: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Leonowens

What are some of the best art schools you know of?

I can’t remember who said it, but the person described CalArts as training artists down to the wrist.:) I spent a couple of months there (in Nam Jun Paik/Shuya Abe’s studio) when CalArts was still in Valencia. It was an interesting experience. For those looking for training in traditional...

    Artist Quotes/Quotes on Art

Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere. — G. K. Chesterton The next two are from Oscar Wilde’s The Soul of Man Under Socialism. Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known. I am inclined to say that it is the only real mode of individualism that...

What I didn't know about bugs

This thread needs a little music :p Some bugs do creep me out (cockroaches, silverfish, earwigs) but I’m happy with a spider or two in the house, while outside just about anything that doesn’t aim to eat me, sting me hard (bees are fine), or drink my blood is ok. My son was really into that...

    HENRY TAYLOR

I have to agree with that. I’ve always enjoyed my time there, I lived there for awhile around 1970, and spent a lot of time there from around 2000-2010. I think what I enjoyed most was all the different communities, and the fact that people were generally pretty friendly. Alas I do prefer cool...

    Art & Politics?

Frankly I'm much more interested in questions like how a political piece of art correlates in form with its supposed content, or how expressive techniques evolve in response to the political environment. One of my favourite books on that is Ralph Shikes' The Indignant Eye...
