Scavenger Hunt from Life #189: Apr 27 - May 9

Jo: Thanks. Super job on the pen set. ...lol I did not intend to celebrate Cinco de Mayo either but I want to eat tacos... So I made them, and Tone happened to point to me that it was Cinco de Mayo too....

Kristen, welcome. Thanks for joining us.

Ai, Cinco de Mayo gave me a good reason to go out and pick up tacos for both of us. Jerry enjoyed them too.

13 - indoor sketch at Starbucks (done on strange wc paper in a sketchbook I bought in Venice) - watercolors and ink

Thanks Kristen2026, join us for a sketch sometime. Any medium.

Thanks, Ai.

Joan, The interesting paper on your Starbucks sketch looks like a napkin texture. Yummy veggies. You did a great job on the sketch. The rock home is so well done. I like the way you show texture. I usually carry a Micron 02 or 03 in the spiral of a sketchbook. But I'm out of good Microns so just stuck the Ohuhus in my bag. I need to get to Hobby Lobby or order some. The two Microns I've been using are in such sad shape, they may not make a full sketch if I'm away from home to switch out with another. Ha.

Gosh, I thought I'd already commented in this hunt. I've been enjoying seeing everyone's sketches! Things have been busy here... baseball last weekend and walks every day and a lot of activity here repairing the septic system. It's good as new now. I won't try to comment on everything, but some that caught my eye...

Joan -- I kept looking at the water in the one with the light grey rock. You do water so well :) Also, I thought it was interesting how well the water worked in the first one with ink lines and darker blue. I like the sky at the nursery. Also nice colors on the textured paper from Venice.

Ai -- I really liked the Lumpini Park watercolors. They both have a wonderful light fresh feeling to them, I don't know how to say what I mean! Your comment about my rocks made me laugh.

Jo -- Like the pen sketch of the pens. I should probably try a micron someday... my team lost the series but won the game I went to on Sunday.

Robin -- I liked the one with the windows over your stove and how there was a bench to go sit on when your weather gets nice!

Fletch -- hi!

Kristen2026 -- hi! Feel free to sketch with us!

I did sketch today but haven't photographed it yet. Will post tomorrow.

We took a day off to go to our cabin. En route, there is a rest area gas station with a Japanese garden ...both done with pencil and watercolor ...about 30 minutes in a 9*12 inch sketchbook

#8 a pair -- Japanese red paper lanterns
#9 rocks or boulders

Jo, thanks. Most of the time I use my Lamy pens when I sketch...unless I'm somewhere I flew. Then I use Micron pens since I'm afraid of the fountain pens leaking. I can also get a thinner line with some of the micron pens so I'll use them if I want something thinner. But I hate when they run out of ink!

Ned, thanks for your comments. I'm never entirely happy with the way water comes out. I guess we are all particular and critical of our own work. lol Sounds like you've been busy out there.

Ai, what a great path with the stones leading you down the path...and the wonderful red lanterns that perk everything up. Our markets at gas stations here are so boring compared to yours. I'm jealous! Lovely sketch.

Joan: Thanks so much. Not all gas stations here are interesting but this one is in the up country on road toward mountains....may be that inspired the owner to have a super stop for everyone.

Joan -- Not that long ago you painted the canal in Venice with the reflections of all the colors and I still think about how awesome that water looked! I've gone back to look at it a few times. It's truly amazing how busy retirement is :) Joe was so right: he told me I'd wonder how I ever found time to work ( although I remember that nothing else got done.... )

Ai -- Neat big WC. That seems intimidating to me and I'm amazed you could do that in half an hour :)

Yesterday I saw this pair of cypress trees on my way home from the beach and that they could be done with just light grey, light and dark green. That cobalt blue hue you all recommended to me makes a nice light grey mixed with yellow ochre, and really nice greens. But after I drew the basic shapes I realized I didn't have my WC with me, or even the palette paper WC "dots" that I usually keep in the flap of my pocket sketchbook. So it's ink wash. My daughter said, "Good! Now you can do it again when you're coming home that way" which is right :)

Ned, thanks for appreciating my work. Nice work on the cypress tree. Now I'll be waiting to see the color version. ;) Super mower. I love the big wheels!! Fun find during your walk.

I'm lucky to live close to two ocean beaches. I can head east or west and be at each of them in about the same time. I find it odd that right now both of them have been under repair. Each of them narrows down to one lane at a time while the workers are hopefully doing their magic. I headed to Smith Point Beach today and they had orange cones the whole length of the bridge...and a large crane in the water next to the bridge. This particular beach has a campground in addition to the beach. The bridge is the only access for cars, so I hope they get their repairs done quickly before the summer season is in full swing.

15 - special to me (the bridge access to the beach) - watercolors

Robin - love you use hatching so well to depict contours and textures. The view and cup it tea are very relaxing looking.

Joan - This may sound silly but you make the water look wet. Still amazed at all the green you can create with your palette. In the rectangle and wheels paintings I really liked how you did the subtle shading to shape the tarp on the boat. Yum tacos. That paper looks like a strange patterned texture. Contrast is strong with the building painting below it.

Jo - Nice line work on the pen set, but I miss your pastels.

Ai - Love how you proportioned the people to enhance the depth of field in both. Hope you enjoyed your holiday in the park as much as I enjoy looking over your shoulder through your paintings. Japanese garden is do pretty.

Ned - like the distant clouds and the feel of movement in the water. Think you have master shading with ink wash. Cool looking cypress. It almost looks abstract. Nice wc of the tractor.

Kristen2026 - hi! 👋🏽

#1 something received as a gift - was an anonymous gift of a Platinum pen.

Keep sketching and learning

Fletch, thanks for the kind words. So glad you were able to join in with a sketch. What a nice gift you received!

Ned, baseball here is on TV for us now. Happy you get to go!! I love the cypress and the mower is exceptional. Like Joan waiting for the colored cypress. (evil grin)

Ai, I agree on the rest area for you. Ours gas stations are pretty plain. We do have Bud-ee's here which have super clean bathrooms and touristy stores and food. No resting area though, they want you to "buy" and go.

Joan and Ned I like the Micron and the Ohuhu pens as I have fewer ink accidents. I forget to get ink for my Lamy pen. I like Zig Millennium pens, too. Haven't seen any in a while. I think they had more durable nibs.

Joan, I hope your roads and bridges get repaired soon, your sketch with the crane is so good and tells the story.

Fletch, thanks so much. I miss my pastels, too. Hard to do them out of my studio these days. I need to make me up a small set to take to PT.... I got a new sketchbook that I could do one sided sketches on. Ooooh, nice gift and excellent drawing. Good to see you here when we can!! I'm smiling.

#10 right next to me...an old rotary phone at an Indy cafe...on our way back home...

1000029921.jpg

All: Oops... with buttons, the above phone I sketch would not be called a rotary one... but at least It feels vintage phone to me... lol... Now Tone and I just arrived back to our Bangkok home. I did not sketch any at the cabin... just enjoying the nature and insects...lol.

Jo, Fletch, Joan, Ned:
Thanks so much for kind comments.

Ned: Lovely pair of trees and the tractor I love.

Jo: Have fun with your tiny PT sketch set.

Fletch: Neat pen you received.

Joan: Wonderful special bridge. Well done sketch. The Venice sketch paper piece came out nice... wonderful texture on the hard brick and hard roof home.

Fletch, Ned, Joan, JoC, and Ai — Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words ❤️

Fletch — Echoing the blessings for you and Sharon 😌 So good to see your sketch of a lovely gift pen ✍️

Kristen — Welcome 👋 I hope you can join in these events 😌 They’re a lot of fun!!!

Joan — The heart was a fun experiment….. and it’s true —-> Joe/Fletch’s continuing encouragement has always been the key to so much that followed. He reminds us to keep learning, but as he himself learns, he also teaches, and so do each of you here ☀️
I really like the image of the young woman engrossed in her planting! What a beautiful, living moment 🌱
The breadth of the Fitness building and the cherry tree sketches suited your subjects, and the interest and beauty you portrayed 🍒
Your cheerful outdoor scene makes me feel happy just looking at it 😂 Great energy.
Your shore sketches are always poignant….. beautifully portrayed 🎨
I can relate to that adorable deer hanging out at the park. I love the peace within the scene, and could sit there forever 🌳
Your sketch at the garden nursery reminded me how you always manage to convey truly complex scenes with beauty and fullness, yet find that balance - always - between detail and peaceful completeness🪻🌼
Fun sketches also of the marine area, and a pair of trees, and yummy cinco de mayo food, and the couple at Starbucks (love the Venice texture 😄), and the roof tiles, and a zillion cones on the bridge 😃

Ai — Wow, your glass factory bottles, and the Thai sweets and green tea sketches are all gorgeous. That glass factory looks like a super fun place to sketch 😂 and I love the idea of creating dessert art — the little “fruits” are very beautiful, and your sketch shines with their colors 🎨
The sketches from the park captivated me with their precision. Perfect style for structures, nature and people portrayed together 🌿
What lovely, peaceful, serene, beautiful sketch of the Japanese garden 😌 Cool vintage phone too 😃

JoC and Robin — Cool sketches, fun to check out all the items and imagine each of you in those places 😊

JoC again — Fantastic sketch of the set of pens, wow! ✍️

Robin again — I’m with Ai about your yummy popcorn! 🍿

Ned — Love your shore sketches….. they always bring back good memories, and remind me of my feet in the sand, with the indistinct feel of life where the sea meets the land that you portray so well 🌎
Fantastic cypress pair, and cool capture of the wild details of that contraption! The cypresses seem like a series of cloud nines on the path to the blue sky heavens above 😂 I agree with you and Fletch about Joan’s ability to paint water 🎨
