Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Fletch, thanks for the new list!

Ai, how great that you were able to get away for a few days to the beach. Happy Birthday to Tone!!! Impressive work on the horse and rider on the beach. You captured that really well! I haven't been on a horse in about 50 years and the last ride didn't go well so I won't be doing that ever again. lol I can still feel the bruises.

Over on FB this photo popped up with a post I wrote after meeting Ai for the first time in person back in 2011. This was the post I wrote back then.
Yesterday I finally got to meet my internet friend, Ai and her family, from Thailand. They were up in CT visiting her host family that she stayed with when she was an exchange student. I couldn't miss the opportunity to actually meet her. We had a great time.

Ai - The beach looks so relaxing. Enjoy. Birthday wishes to Tone, Like how you captured the water and sand with just a few strokes.👍🏽

Joan - We always say how fast the Hunts seem to go. What about the years! 14 years and both of you look the same but longer hair now on both.

Off to the lawyer today so not much art time.
Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Fletch, Ai and I knew each other from online quite a long time before we had the chance to meet. Time flies.

1 - local landmark (Flo's is a well-loved beach shack serving food and drinks nearby that has been open since the 1926. Right now they have a big sign in front doing a countdown to opening day, which is April 12.) watercolors and ink

Fletch, Joan, Jo, Ned and All: Thanks for your kind comments...

Joan: Thanks so much for our beautiful memory....Gorgeous Flo's food shack place in all details... Can't wait to see your sketch of it's opening...

Joan & Ai, lovely and beautiful photograph! Ai, you were an exchange student, so was I, entire year but I was in Maine.

Grapes..Hi, nice to hear that. I was in Vermont highschool for a year in 1987-1988...but later my host family moved down to Connecticut. That was why I reunited with my host family and Joan there. I love Maine !!!

Ai, happy you are out. Happy Birthday Tone. Beautiful beach scene. Applause. Fun bike and motorbike. You capture the look so well in a few lines. Your water park is super and the head covering made me laugh.

Joan, what great memories. Fun to see you and Ai together. Awww, Flo's looks like a great spot. Love the details...

Fletch, hope you get all the paperwork done.

Grapes, hey there.

Ai, you got so much done. Nice work on the lines of the bicycle and the motorcycle. Oh, that water slide looks like so much fun, and the area is really nice. I like the motorcycle with the canopy! Just what you need on a really sunny day.

Grapes, where in Maine were you an exchange student? My sister and her family live along the Maine coast in Damariscotta, about an hour north of Portland.

Today all over our country there were protests against the extreme measures affecting our democracy. A friend and I went to one of the local protests where several thousand people showed up despite the cold and rainy conditions. My urban sketching friend and I tend to sketch everything. The rain splattered my sketch a bit, but I continued anyway.
2 - head coverings (most people were wearing hooded rain jackets) - mostly ink with a bit of color added

3 - chair (The woman under the umbrella was seated. I forgot to sketch her walker that was next to her.) - ink
