Enough Already

I used to paint on bought panels till their cost went crazy.
I then made my own but I got too old for all the sawing, sanding, and gesso.
I then went on oil paper which two years ago was about 18.00 a pad of 24. Last ordered pads two months ago at 23.00. Today I went to order and they are 44.00.

I am done. I can't afford the cost. I have a few old panels left and I wil paint, take a photo, and remove the paint so I can use it again. I am too old for this flicking world.

Paint on untempered hardboard. You can use a straightedge and a razor knife to score and break them to size, though, of course, hardboard may also be crazy expensive now.

I hpe that you find something to paint on, as we look forward to a daily dose of creativespark's most prolific painter.

I'll find some way to paint I just probably won't keep anything. No the end of the world. Just having a bad day.

It seems that every art supply has gotten so expensive and I'm sorry it's frustrating you, Wayne. You have to find a way to keep painting! I really hope you won't end up painting over the beautiful work that you do; there must be another option. I was going to add a tube of acrylic paint onto an Amazon order this morning and it was $24. Who needs permanent violet anyways? Not me I guess. 🙄

The price of walnut oil, too!
I will buy another bottle of that.
I'm using the canvas paper pads, too. but have also used gessoed cardboard.
And I have a large supply of oil, acryllic, and cardboard, and wc and gouache paint, along with both graphite and charcoal sticks.
Supports, though.... What can be used instead of watercolor paper?
I do this for my pleasure, to keep my mind working.

thanks Donna and Ntl .. it's not just me it's everywhere. .. it's simply gouging. How does something double it's price in two months when it had only one small increase over two years. Crooks I tell ya. Robbery.

Lamar: the Masonite comes out to 57.++ for 24 as opposed to 44 for 24 for paper .. but with Masonite you have to buy gesso so Masonite is more and that is only 1/8 Masonite which would warp.

Correct me if I am wrong;
I think I am right in assuming I could paint acrylic over cardboard and then put oil over the acrylic as gesso these days is acrylic.

The cost of everything is crazy Wayne. We are all feeling it, but don't quit. You'll find a way to create. If nothing else, you can go to pencil and draw. You can always paint rocks too, the cost of the support is low. ;)

Yes, you can paint on found wood, planks, rocks, cardboard, old cabinet doors, junk store items, or just start to think out of the box. You do have to gesso some things, but acrylic under oil works. You can "build up" with acrylic and put a thinner layer of oil on top to save a little on the oil paint. I don't know if you use student grade or professional grade oils, but sometimes I will use student grade for underpainting to save a little bit of money. Putting the professional grade over it helps with the lightfast issue.

You can not stop painting though. It is your life. I don't think you could if you wanted to! I think it's in your blood. And drawing is cheaper of course. I draw a lot (a lot of bad stuff), but it doesn't matter if I fail at drawing over and over. It's just paper and a lot of scrap. I can draw on anything and there's nothing like the line. The line is everything. Big ones, little ones, long ones, short ones... the list goes on. ;) You can do a whole landscape in just lines.

I should not have said that. I can afford the cost. I am just having trouble justifying it in my mind. I only paint for fun so with rising cost I could probably paint over my panels all the time instead of buying new ones. I have a book left so between now and then I need to decide on how I continue. Ayin is right. I very much doubt I could stop. But in all honesty: painting is painting. You can't replicate it you can only replace it.

I apologize for ranting I guess I had a real bad day. :)

:):):):)
I found a reliable source this morning. I have a few hundred or more one side painted the other side free. You can paint on both sides of the xl paper so I am free sailing for sometime.

Well, I read your "rant" yesterday and couldn't comment at that moment. I just felt bad that you were feeling that bad. I'm glad you knew you could come here and vent - good lord, what good is knowing a bunch of fellow artists who know exactly what you're talking about, if you can't vent to them? ;)

Happy to see your sense of humor taking over! At the end, it's what keeps us feeling light enough to keep going. ❤️

when you can't laugh you are in trouble. Thank you Terri.
What do you mean sense of humor? You mean they're a no show! Say it ain't so.

I get Canson oil and acrylic paper at walmart. about $10 for 9x12 and $15 for 11x14. They come with 24 sheets but for my small paintings I cut them into quarters. Doing so leaves me with 96 small supports.
Seems like it would be a shame to paint over a painting. you know instead of storing them away somewhere..... Actually painting over them might have benefits.

...junk store items...
Yes! I have just discovered a wealth of panels at the local thrift store. There's a lot inspiration-porn winding up there, much of it printed on masonite or MDF. The print side can be roughed up and gessoed or the backside could be prepared. Or both!

Hey sometimes you just need to vent a bit! Nothing clears the air and the mind like a good rant now and then...😁
