And a detail shot to see the paint application:

I am finding my way but I can't explain all the differences from oil and acrylic to a point they would help anyone else. To me it all boils down to feel. I now make my mixtures to get a consistency of how the mixture feels right when it's coming off the brush or knife. As for the way I paint I would call it impressionism as it's all about broken color and light. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone here can correct my thoughts.

It’s great to see the close-up so I can study the variety of strokes and marks you made. I’d say this is Impressionism too - you define the subject but not like a camera would. I’m curious, Wayne, was this always your painting style or has it evolved to be like this over the years?

Thank you Donna. Oh my, how I have evolved. I think it came about more out of desperation. I always drifted from this to that. I think most of my learning came from my making abstracts. The freedom to do what I wanted to do opened doors to things I could do. Much like your little abscraps I had a new freedom. I think a turning moment was a video by Ulrich Glieter a Russian Impressionist. It was a plein air demo on utube and he kept applying strokes till he got what he wanted. That’s basically all I do. I block in the big shapes and values and then keep adding strokes without making mud untill I am happy with what the paint shows. Stepping back is imperative as we see differently close up. ie … the close up on this piece. It is so different when viewed from a distance. example would be no preconceptions of want it will be except flowers in a pot.

I read a little about Herr Gleiter and he studied in Russia as well as in Germany so the Russian influence is authentic. I can see why you admire his style so much, Wayne, and I see a lot of his loose, juicy brush strokes in your work. This piece is stunning! The way the flowers dissolve into the soft background is so beautiful and the texture on the edge of the table brings it to life. You seem to have adapted to acrylics amazingly well!

I love the textures of both of these Wayne and interesting to learn more from you both about painting.

Thank you Donna and Jade. I think I’ve errored off coarse a little as I find I am fancy finishing a lot more than needed. I noticed that today so tomorrow’s post will still be fussed at. It’s the Russian Impressionism that I really like as it’s unfinished but has all that is needed for the viewer to finish it.

Nice one - and there’s plenty of looseness in the flower. Your dark background works so well too.

Thanks Donna. That was exasperation. I couldn’t get my intended color to work. I guess it was the wrong value.

9 x 12 inches .. acrylic on paper .. alla prima .. painted 19/08/25
Been using acrylics for 40 days give or take a day and I completed my 40th painting this morning .. I do find getting a good picture of broken color a little tough .. the camera doesn't work like our eyes do so things seem a little more brittle and chopped where in the real the colors marry each other. I have to say I am beginning to enjoy myself more as I lose the doubt about making a decision to paint again but this time in acrylics. Seems I learn something each time out and that makes it exciting. Thanks for looking and commenting.

I know what you mean about getting good photos of our work, Wayne. Any subtle touches are lost and it’s just not the same as seeing it with our eyes. I like how you made the yellows glow in this one - different yellows next to each other. Your work in acrylics is inspiring to me so I’m glad you’re sticking with them!

Thank you Donna. I painted the paper in a burnt sir a before I painted. I keep all my clean up water, anything tainted with acrylic paint, into a caring pail which I dump outside as the sludge settles into a crust and that could cause clogging in your pipes as well as I am on septic so I need to be careful what goes through it. It’s an outside chance but it could happen.

As for the sentiments above, after painting the last two I have come to a conclusion that when using broken color it is imperative you get a proper color to subordinate my color scheme and paint my support before blocking in with that color. The compliment of my major color should always work, as the major will be one of my three primaries. I think at this point I will try to keep my support color in the intensity of the secondaries as I will use secondaries for my block in. The final touches will be the primaries plus whatever color I think I need to get a particular warm or cold hue.

Beautiful picture though I get that about the pictures... Your paintings look very impressionist and i can imagine somewhat the real life texture. Well done on your forty day stint. I'm about the same with drawing.

Thank you. It’s my morning glory. A great way to start the day. Good you are working each day. Congrats on a good run.
